In years gone by, if you saw people at restaurant bowing their heads at their table, they were giving thanks before a meal.

Now, they are just checking their cell phones.

Boy isnt that the truth. Or holding up traffic at a green light while not paying attention.

Ya family values are under attack just by the way many people live now. Not intentional in many cases, they just don't know the damage being done.

Was thinking back to all the changes that occurred during my grandparents life time.

They were born in the late 1880s to early 1890s.
Civil war was still fresh in the memory of their parents. My grandmother shared bits of that from time to time.
No electric lights.
No cars.
Horse and buggy, stage coach and locomotive train transportation.
Over their life time they saw come to be...
Electric power, lights, appliances, telephone, radio, TV, automobiles, airplanes, man on the moon, main frame computers and the first desktop computers. And I'm sure a lot more. I once asked my grandma what the most important innovation was to her. She said the refrigerator.

Life at a slower pace. Sure sounds good. A bit off topic, but people often ask us why we don't have a yard light here at the homeplace. Why? Because you lose the night sky. Sometimes it's just nice to look up.

We have yard lights for when we need to go out for firewood or for guests. Otherwise, not used. Under the trees it's very dark. Don't get to see much of the night sky anyway for the trees and encroaching city light pollution.

My earliest recollections, rotary dial party line phone service. Radio, no TV. We had indoor plumbing, but my grandparents farms back then didn't. Trip to the outhouse in arctic temperatures with pages ripped from the newspaper or Sears/MontgomeryWards catalog for toilet paper. They also still had hand crank phones. They did have electric lights. Heat was by wood stove with a side-kick water tank for hot water.

I always said I was born 100 years too late. I would have loved the 1800's and all the values that went with them.

Speaking of lights, my neighbor was the only one that had one on an electric pole a few acres away. Since her passing, her nephew recently just cut it off. It sure is dark out there. I especially noticed it tonight with no moon light. Are we going to get one? Heck no, lol. It's just fine with us just the way it is.

We live out a ways. It was so nice to sit on the deck in the spa and look up at the brilliant sky and see millions of stars. We added security lights after a break in several years ago, but they are motion activated and can be turned off. Then then ten year old spa died. We can sit on the deck in the rockers...

As far as I'm concerned, the cell phone thing has become an epidemic. Many times, I've seen whole families sitting quietly at a restaurant, ALL on their phones, not paying any attention to each other. I personally would NOT allow that!

They do do that. It's great getting daily phone picture/text and video updates of our first grandchild! Like anything there can be addictive inappropriate use as Mark shared.

Yep, the latest addiction scourge. I recently read a study that found that college students spend 8 to 10 hours a day on electronic media. Yes, cell phones have their place and uses, but it's now the tail wagging the dog. I am constantly seeing people who are on their cell when they should be driving, working, paying for their groceries, connecting in real life with other people, but no, that 5 1/2" screen is their world.

I work with someone everyday that I put up with the cell phone in front of his face while Im trying to talk business to him. Hes a millennial and his 57 year old mother is the same way. Its totally disrespectful and its all I can do to ignore it. These things might keep people closer in touch but its gone way past that. There way overpriced, the bill that goes along with it for there usage is ridiculous and as far as Im concerned a rotary phone needs to be back

Then.... My favorite 45 was Little Red Riding Hood... Sam Sham and the Pharohs.
Now..... It's a custom job that will shoot one hole groups rapid fire at 7 yards, and ten ring groups at fifteen.

Then... I wanted a Stingray bike and Corvette Hot Wheels
Now... I just drool over the 63 Corvette Stingray.

Then... I would never raise my voice to a teacher in school, talk back, or question authority.
Now... Teachers wish.
