Went to the range. Guy before me finished and left. Had the place to myself long enough to get the report in Range Reports.
Thought plink a little and new guy shows. Call a ceasefire so he can set up.
The whole line is empty and he sets up right next to me. He sighting in two ported 223s. 18 inch ported 223s.
Ported rifles are a great way to ruin someone else's day at the range.

I find 223s to be pretty obnoxious even without ports. I have an 18 inch AR and a 22 inch bolt action and both are too loud for my tastes.

That was my reaction the first time I fired my Long Ranger .223.

I really don't have any room to talk because every firearm I take to a range is a big boomer .... for that reason I do try to stay as far away from the nearest fellow shooter as possible .... that said, I usually end up being assigned a spot when we check in and pay the fee

Been more considerate given the issues of ported rifles and flying brass.
Him setting up right next to you with lots of room would have been a little disturbing as well and a sign of isolation/independence issues.
I would have called a cease fired, got up and moved and not said a word.

Actually I had just pulled my target and was very happy with the info I had just got.
The Trap Team was practising and the Shoot Master there was in charge of ceasefires.
I chose not to Harsh My Mellow with the confrontation.

Even with hearing protection ? - and I assume you are using some.

Yes, I think it's more about percussion than actual noise. Lever actions are my first love and the bores are a lot bigger and pressures are lower in the loads I shoot. I find that much more pleasant. I wear electronic earmuffs with earplugs underneath. I mainly shoot the 223s on our 500 yard range, so the roof over the benches might have something to do with it too.

I'm not sure percussion is the correct term, but I'm at a loss for a better way to describe it.

When you feel it in your chest, that's loud.

I think you mean CONCUSSION.
The roof no doubt has something to do with it. The few times I have shot at an actual 'range' I could hear and 'feel' a difference but nothing that would ever stop my shooting.
Personally I do not find the .223 objectionable - in an AR or anything else really but the only .223 I have in an 18" NEF Handi-Rifle and it's no problem with standard ear muff protection - and I am outside so that helps.

That's the word I was looking for! Wouldn't come to me for anything.

It doesn't stop me from shooting them, but I prefer bigger bores. I could invest in a suppressor, but that's too much hassle and expense. It seems to me it's a direct link to an agency that makes me kinda nervous too.

I guess under some conditions a suppressor might have some useful advantages but I have never felt the need for one - and they are not as effective with super sonic ammo.
I see suppressors as kind of 'trendy' as well - within certain groups that is.

I try to be courteous to my neighbors at home and at the range. My comfort is also a consideration. I can create loads that are quiet and accurate at ranges associated with plinking and pest control without the need for a suppressor. I can buy a lot of reloading supplies for the cost of a suppressor and a stamp, too.

When I let loose with my .30-06 at the indoor range, everybody looks around the barrier. .223s are pussy cats in comparison. 300 win mag puts my .30-06 to shame. I know what you mean about concussion. I feel that particularly at the indoor range with high powered rifle calibers nearby.

FWIW, I would have opted for a tamer caliber if I hadn't gotten a good deal on the used Weatherby I ran across last year.

My youngest has a AR style rifle. Do not know the reason, but with us both shooting out of the same bulk ammo box, the .223 out his rifle is much quieter than out of my Long Ranger. My partial guess is that some noise producing energy (if that is the right term) is lost in exercising the semi automatic function along with some muzzle break noise reduction. The LR doesn't do that.
