Finally bought a new computer

My old bottom end Asus was getting old and slow. I can relate.

I've been threatening to get a new one and finally decided it was time.

Staples had a Lenovo with a little faster processor, double the ram, an SSD, and an HD screen 1900 vs 1300. I thought it was a good price. Don't see the HD screen computers under $400 much.

Man, this thing loads web pages a lot quicker. Don't know if the main difference is the RAM or the SSD, or a combo. I really like the higher resolution screen. I was rather surprised that it had a built in DVD player. You don't often see those on laptops much anymore.

What pain getting everything set up.

bought my Lenovo from Best Buy several years ago .... have been happy with it .... when time comes to replace it, I'll look at Lenovo first

Understood about a painful learning curve, trying to get the set up right. Just recently I also bought a new computer, which has brought me into quite a different realm (for me) of processing. I got a Chromebook Spin 15, packaged in an Acer computer. Been slowly climbing the hill trying to figure out new stuff, with quite a lot of suggestions and guidance from CT_Shooter. He has never had one of these, but is very skilled on computers, especially researching most issues and finding resolutions.

Never thought I'd make such a switch as this. And to top it off, I signed up for an Adult Education Class at a nearby career center. It starts first week in October, but I could use more training now. The Chromebook uses Google Drive and The Cloud, basically another way to process other than Microsoft Office. Yeah, a little hard to "see clearly" at the moment traveling through the Cloud! Slowly but surely.

Speed up is most likely due the SSD and faster RAM. I have no spinners in my machine, only 2 SSD's. Also use an SSD for backups, makes b/u a LOT faster. Also, the video adapter is most likely a lot faster. Nice to have a new machine! Could also be that the famisters are overmodulating a bit that make the superheterodyne (mentioned above) dilithium plasma injectors resonate penumbrally. Really speeds things up!

understood .... we've found that when our discombobulator acts up, things go down hill quickly

My 5 year old desktop is still plenty fast, I built it as fairly high end gaming computer and don't really game that much anymore. But, I do need to upgrade to Win10 by the end of the year. Didn't get a copy when they were free so it's going to cost me $100. I'm still perfectly happy with Win7.

I agree Dave windows 7 is just fine. I have a couple with 7 but Ive since switched to a Macbook. I like it alot and wont go back.

Been fighting with Windows for a long time with glitches, viruses, lock ups etc. When they slammed me with a windows ten upgrade it really went downhill quickly. System locked up a bunch and I was calling windows for help too much. Had one tech tell me my system was not compatible with 10 and I should never had installed it. I explained that I did not choose to, it was done for me and if it was not compatible then they should remove it and re-install 7. Can't be done, got it working again for a while. That was the last straw. Bought a Mac desktop and have not regretted it (except for the cost). Got an iPhone and I will not go back to Windows ever.

well understood .... I've gotten highly frustrated with Windows but not to the point of moving to an Apple .. .. not to say that won't happen one day

I dont have the desktop model I just have a macbook pro. I have had it for about 3 years now with no issues. It to me is alot easier to use than a widows computer. Once you play with it a while its really not to hard to figure out.

I cloned the Win7 hard drives in our desktops, then upgraded the cloned drives to Win10 when the upgrade was still free. But then kept using Win7 from the original hard drives. Win10 when it first came out was awful. Regardless twice a year I kept the Win10 cloned drives up to date with security updates/upgrades. With Win7 support ending next year, the Win10 drives will replace those with Win7 permanently. We have had Win10 on our daily use laptops for sometime and it is way better than when it was first released. Has actually awhile back reached the crossover point where Win10 has gotten better than Win7. Some of the now taken for granted ease of navigation things in Win10 just aren't possible in Win7.

As far as Macs, family members have them and I've used them some. I found that basic navigation on them a bit odd and less than intuitive. Have nothing against the Mac, but I do despise Apple.

I use to despise them to Mags because of there method of getting you to buy into there entire plan. But I have no love for microsoft either. Buying a computer that locks up and continuing to market operating systems that are difficult to use and dont work well I dont care much for either. Havent had those issues with the Macbook. YMMV

My despite for Apple is mostly from their frivolous lawsuits over look and feel device operation against their competitors and secondly their lack of truly new engineering. What Apple does that is ingenious is put together existing mature pieces of cheep technologies into new usage models then convincing consumers it's 'new' so that they can justify their price gouging.

Some of my kids and their wives have Macbooks and to hear from them they are stable and they like them. On the other hand they've mostly ditched their iphones because of poor reliability/dependability. My brief usage exposure to their Macbooks, I concluded they were more difficult and less intuitive to use starting out, but likely just fine after the learning curve. This is sorta true of Windows too. There is a slight learning curve twice a year when MS rolls out their new Win10 features and changes the behavior of existing ones (or moves them somewhere else, so that they have to be hunted down).

A lot of lockup blame is misplaced on Windows when it should be placed on the hardware/BIOS of the computer itself. I've had no problems with Win7, Win8.1 (hated 8.0) and Win10 on our current systems. Then again when I buy a computer I don't buy the cheapest laptop hardware (I also build my own desktops). We've owned Acer, Asus, Dell and Lenovo laptops and they were krap/flaky out of the box new. Both our current laptops are mid-priced HP. Our youngest has a higher priced Samsung. The HPs and Samsung are holding up well both hardware and Win10-wise. Absolutely zero lockups or hangs.

As far Microsoft as a company, well they've gotten too big. They tend to make stupid product decisions and being mega-big those dumb decisions go to mega-screw ups with their customer base.

I have had 2 Iphones and I have had Samsung android phones. To say which one is the best is nothing more than a personal preference. I have heard the claim about Apple taking old technology and claiming its new. Does Apple make the best phone I have no clue does Samsung or any other android company make the best phone I have no clue. But I havent had any issues with either one. One does something better than the other. Samsung has great cameras but im not able with my eyes to to say which one has a better camera. For that matter neither one of them has a better camera than one you can buy. Phones are a personal preference and many times people change phones on a gimmick. Iphones = Ford Android phones = Chevys...YMMV

Never said which phone was better. Just stated the bad experience my kids had with their iphones. Didn't even bring Samsung phone into the discussion nor cameras for that matter. I don't really care what other people use. It works for them fine then fine. However disparage of the Windows OS isn't appropriate because of the poor quality of the hardware underneath. Why the bad/good usage experience varies between different users.

Now as far as Fords go. My grand parents, parents, my wife and I were multi-generational Ford diehards until we bought a new model year 1995 Ford Windstar. That was a lemon. Went round and round with Ford over it. It was the last Ford we bought. Not saying that all Fords are bad, but Ford lost our brand loyalty because of the repeat problems and poor customer service/resolution.
