We had a storm last night and while putting garbage in container this morning I took notice that wind had knocked over
my extra yard trash cans. While looking at the black plastic cans I noticed a bunch of flying insects coming and going from an area next to where the cans sit.
Yep...yellow jackets had a ground nest in that area and if that can had not fallen over and acted as a good background I would never had
noticed them. Most likely I would have run up on them when cutting grass some days later!
Well first nest I have seen in 3 yrs. so will have to scout out the yard from now on before any yard work.
Anyway I was saved again and gas bomb time this evening!

We have had a couple of ground nests this year. That’s rare for our area. I’ve sprayed them twice but they are so far in that I think some are still around. Good luck with yours!

What I do is get a cup full of gasoline and dump it in the hole at night and there is NO need to light it as the liquid and fumes do the job.

Now more important is my dog which is a Mini-Pin terrier mix WILL investigate holes in the yard and I have to try and find anymore
of these ground nest before he does!
Luckily this one is on other side of my fence where he does not go.

You could try blasting them but you run the risk of upsetting them and guns are expensive as you know...

I light them. I get satisfaction seeing the nasty things fly into the flame, their wings burn off and the rest falling into the flame.

On another note, you cannot outrun them of a John Deere 955.

Can't light them since they are next to my garage. Will fix them though!

That could certainly turn out bad. A guy here used gas and a match. I've no idea how much gas but he didn't short them any. Caught his truck on fire under the hood. Old truck that leaked everywhere which probably why it caught so easily but still. I laughed till I cried.

I work in a Military Staging area. We get them all the time. The pest control guy finally gave me a can of spray that works like nothing else I have seen. Not sure what it is as it has a blank white label on the can. It drops them in a seconds

Brake cleaner?? That works great for me if I need to knock one down without a residue all over stuff.

I took care of the nest and it was interesting!
The nest was stuck to side of an old piece of 2x4 with half of the nest in the ground. This was covered up by an old tarp with
a small piece of scrap siding board.
I carefully removed each layer of cover very quickly and then would go for cover which was the garage side exit door nearby.
When I pulled the tarp away there was a large mass of angry yellow jackets on top of nest

After a few hours of a cool down period and just before dark a good gasoline dump took care of it!
Nest about size of a softball.

Fortyshooter, I think it was wasp killer but I'm not sure. We have strict hazmat rules hence the plain white label I guess.
