"when are you taking me shooting"

Post by Sir Henry » Wed May 25, 2016 11:29 am

I'm going shooting later today but need to wait till after 9 am and a haircut. So I drove into town to get a latte. I go to the same latte stand and see the same baristas and usually will chat for the two minutes it takes to make the latte. Often they will ask you what you are going to do that day and my reply is usually work in the yard or go shooting. One young gal in particular always replies she would like to go shooting but doesn't know anyone that will take her. So today when I said I was going shooting she just blurted out the question "when are you taking me shooting?"

I was kind of shocked as I had no idea she was trying to get me to take her. I'm old enough to be her grandfather. So I replied okay I'll take you shooting granddaughter.

A few years ago another barista and I talked about shooting. She was a little younger than me and had a teenage son that wanted to go. So four of us went, her, her son and her son's friend. We had a great time and the kids were polite and obeyed all my rules which were a little more strict than basic range rules.

That would be very nice of you. Which reminds me, one of these days I have to take my 13 year old grandson shooting again with one of the .22's and possibly his .243 if he wants to take it. This is his model 700,

Always fun to have a shooting partner!
And learning usually happens both ways.

Beautiful! This is what's needed to get the next generation to the range. This is why the NRA has the mentor program. I see it all the time on forums. Young folks with desires and no one to teach them. Everything from shooting to fixing their own car.

My Golden Boy has introduced a couple of young 'uns to shooting. And I learned a great trick. One of the hardest things to teach is trigger safety. Keeping that finger out of the trigger guard till ready to shoot. Here's the trick:
Image

See that screw above the trigger. When someone's hand is in the correct position they will feel that screw. A lad I was teaching showed me that. All I had to do was say feel the screw or button if you will. They instantly feel for it. Hard to perform a negligent discharge with your finger up there. There is one on each side so it works for south paws too!

Enjoy your range trip with your new friend.

Way to go gramps!
My 11 year old granddaughter just started shooting a BB gun with her father. I look forward to being able to get her to shooting a .22 when her dad says it's okay.

The only question is, which of your "hundreds" of rifles will you use to introduce her to shooting? Or is that "thousands"??

Good choice! I bet it took a lot of consideration to come to that decision. ;)
