Retirement

Post by markiver54 » Tue Apr 16, 2019 12:03 pm

I am retired now only for about 2 1/2 years. I'm not bored at all yet as many told me I would be.
Of those who are retired, ( sure there are quite a few ) considering the age graph, how many are truly happy with more time on their hands...assumption of course.
I just love being on my own time clock now! No more bed at 9:30 and up at 5:30. :D

I would be much happier, if I was physically able to do all the things Miss T and I had put off til retirement. But, I have time to work in the woodshop, learning leatherworking, fish and shoot when I'm up to it, and I'm waking up each morning without an evil laugh in the background and 1,000 degree temps. I'm golden.

I hear ya Jim. I too have some physical limitations at this point, ;) but still couldn't be happier living my own schedule! :)

I was always more like bed at midnight or later and up at 5:00. Now I'm very rarely up earlier than 9:00.

Ditto, I'm still able to do all my chores around my place but it is getting harder. Need to get my other knee replaced, should make things easier. My replaced knee was getting so bad I could hardly walk a couple of blocks, it's been 4 years now and it's still pain free.

Wow Dave, you weren't getting much sleep back then.
I'm kinda like you now, up around 9:00 give or take. Heck, I can't get to sleep before 11:00 or 12:00.
Even if I have to go to the doctor or something, I ask for the latest appointment possible! :)

I retired once, I recommend it to everyone. I kept a part time job, which I still have.
A little over three years ago, I also went back to work full time. It took months to adjust back to full time. In January, I was promoted at the full time job and it became a three day a week job. I got some other considerations too. What I really needed was more time off. The four day weekends are great. I still am lucky enough to have my health.
My better half and I are looking for a small acreage. Nothing too big. I want to plant and tend a large garden, fruit trees, berry bushes and chickens. We are being smart, as this should be our last home. First floor master suite, no intricate landscaping etc.
I can't wait to retire again!

Yes, unless it's something urgent I always ask for a late morning or early afternoon appt. I've always hated rushing in the morning, I like time to sip my coffee, watch the news and glance at the newspaper before getting ready to go.

I had my right knee replaced in 1998... But it should have been replaced years earlier. I had already had two major surgeries and five arthroscopic surgeries done on it in lieu of the replacement. Too young, they said. By putting it off until they had no choice... I only got about 85% use back, even with 110% effort in rehab. In 2012 l had a revision of that knee. Kinda like replacing the brake pads. Again, only partially successful. I love my chair these day. Mobile.

My knees are ok for now despite tearing a ligament and my meniscus right before I quit working, knock on wood . ;)
Getting a bit concerned now though because my left hip has been bothering me off and on. :(

I am so Blessed. No significant problems. I am working part time at the local gas and rob. Leaves me lots of time for hobbies and helping friends and family.

Am sitting by the water now, waiting for that catfish.

The only problems I have are remembering what day it is, go fishing or shooting, and remembering if any of the grandkids have a game. I volunteer, I have no outdoor chores and just the usual aches and pains of a distinguish man of my age. I do like retirement.

Well, speaking from the viewpoint of an older gentleman I can assure you that it will not get better.
Most of my body lets me know I am still alive every morning. My knees ache, by back, my shoulders, well you get the picture.
The up side is that they ache. In other words I'm still here to feel it. 8-)

A few years back I had an old Black Lab. A 95 pound female who was all love and affection, but getting very lame. A Nurse friend
told me to give her Glucosemine with Condrotine. I opened the capsules and sprinkled it on her food twice a day. In a couple months
she was running and playing again. Unfortunately a few years later she got lame again and we had to put her down. Sad day.

So I thought to myself, self, if it worked for the dog, why not me. After all it sold over the counter as a supplement, so I started
taking two a day. At the time my hands were so sore I could hardly do anything with them. It's been ten years and my hands
are fine. In fact everything got better, but sadly as I get older it gradually is coming back. My Doctor kept track of this little
experiment and now tells all his older patients about it.

Just a suggestion. If you decide to try it you can buy it over the counter at Walmart.

I tried Glucosamine with Chondroitin when my knee was hurting but it didn't help. Now that I"m older and have started having more body parts ache I should try it again. Over the counter pain meds have never helped me much and they're getting so strict about giving out the good stuff. On the rare occasion I get a pain med prescription I try to make it last as long as I can.

That's the one thing that concerns me about another knee replacement. 4 years ago the surgeon sent me home with enough good pain meds to last a few weeks, now I hear they give you enough for maybe a week and then tell you to take an Advil.

I know opioid addiction is a big problem but they've made it so restrictive it's unfair to people who really need it.

Been hearing a lot of good things about CBD. My son swears by it and is encouraging me to try it. It's not cheap, but pain is part of my daily life. Will Not take any powerful opioids no matter what! Soo considering all other options at this point. I know, given my age, ( and I accept that reality ) that it is just a matter of keeping it as minimal as possible. Thankfully, I can still do many of the things I want to do...with caution. Holding a gun is still not a problem...thank GD... :)

I use a CBD salve on wrist and shoulder. It helps. It has nothing to do with getting high. Just a good analgesic. I recommend it to all.

I always ask for a 1pm appt due to parking at the VA. It is terrible. If I have a morning appt, regardless of the time, I have to arrive before seven am or all the handicapped spaces are taken and I have trouble getting in and out of the vehicle and getting the chair out. Arrive too late, you might spend an hour looking for a space. Morning appt, I shoot to arrive by 645 at the latest, so I have to leave by 530.

10am appt means I doze in the chair, pay $7 for a $4 breakfast, and chat with a lot of new friends. With a 1pm appt, I get there around 1130, and folks have gone to lunch, freeing up those blue spaces. I might wait thirty minutes but one will open. :D
