First time out for a while

Post by bandit1250 » Sat Dec 01, 2018 5:08 pm

Today was the first time out in the woods for what seems like months ago but was only a few weeks. I never coughed once while in the woods so maybe
I have gotten to the end of the tunnel with the coughing spells from weeks ago when I got sick. I saw deer on the way in the road this morning as I was about 20 min. late getting there due to trying to make up my mind about going at all. Didn't see a deer in the woods to slam with the 444 Marlin but saw a lot of squirrels and 11 turkeys that were all long bearded gobblers. Saw the turkeys in the area I usually hunt and was wishing it was still season and I had my Sako 222 with me. There had to be at least two with beards over 11". While sitting in the woods the crows started calling all around me and flying over. I love crow hunting and it can be a lot of shooting when they come to the call. After deer season I will get back to calling and shooting crows. I have a couple of shotguns to choose from that will work fine for crows. The 30" full choke 870 will reach out good for the areas that they usually come in high. The 20ga. full choke is not as good as the 12 ga. but is just my favorite shot gun so it has to go out for its turn to. The Beretta 686 Onyx is shorter over all and works well in the thickets and pines I sometimes call from that is a tight spot to maneuver long barrel guns from. The Beretta has screw in chokes that is a little bit of a benefit depending on how the crows come in. Some days the full works best and sometimes the improved cylinder works great. Plus the Beretta has sling studs for a strap that helps in carrying it and the call. This will be my crow trio for this winter.

So pleased to hear you're feeling well enough to get back out in the woods. It's always been the best medicine for me after being sick for awhile. Good for you.

I could be happy with any of those bird guns. The 870 has always fit me the best when it comes to pump shotguns and I've tried them all. It's the gun I think of when I see the word Remington. Beretta OUs have also been a good match for me, too. Love the wood on that one.

Sorry you didn't have any luck with the 444 today.
Sounds like ou enjoyed the sights and sounds.

Nice collection of scatter guns.
I have a Beretta ou, but not near as nice as yours.
