The YMCA had an off week hike and only five of us went. Tom, Sung (center) and I have been on the Thursday hikes for years but the two other ladies were new. I'm not sure if they will be coming back. For us this eight mile hike was just a warm up for more difficult hikes later in the season. The Y also has Tuesday hikes and they are much easier. I think the two just picked the wrong day.


The trail heads up behind the sign and is green everywhere. This is all second and third growth forest.


After a couple miles of walking in older dark forest we come to a clearing and daylight.

At the top I showed everyone my new slingshot. "Hey watch me hit that tree".


Tom went more for the watch how far this goes.

A two mile off trail hike brought us to this old fireplace.


We always see the weirdest things in the forest.


I don't know why Sung thought she had to duck.


So everyone got back safe and on time. The two extra gals thought they had slowed us down but they were at the trailhead within ten minutes of us. On previous hikes some have arrived an hour later so they actually did quite well. Next Thursday we hike the Jim Whitaker Trail.

Awesome pictures, thanks. It is nice that the two other ladies could be along and give it their best. Eight miles is more than I could do anymore, I think? I wonder what the story is behind the old fireplace?

It was someone's home. It had concrete which means it was later than the 1880's. The concrete was also high quality and I'm guessing it was built in the early 1900's. The forest burnt in the 1950's and the house was destroyed.

Envious. The only hiking I do is from the first to third floor in our building!

Looks like a nice day. Just like your range reports, I feel like I was there.

When I get old(er) I can tell everyone at the nursing home about all these great times I had.

The footprint of the house wasn't large so it wasn't a mansion.

Actually a little hard to hike with you, SH. Pictures are reminders of the hiking my wife and I did when we lived in northwest OR at turn of the century. Now that sounds a little old, too! We enjoyed very much both the hiking & camping we did, and the OR "environment folk" sure did a terrific job then of maintaining beautiful countryside.

If only we could have convinced all our Midwestern kids around here to move out to OR, we would have stayed. That would have been a beautiful area to spend some retirement years!

I should be making a hiking post once a week for the rest of the spring and summer. These last two haven't been very glamorous but they are getting us in shape.
