I've enjoyed reading the "travel adventures" of JEBar and SH as they travel around the country with their "homes." I'm sure there are other Forum Folk who similarly live and get to see our land this way. Also would guess there are some wannabes...

Anyone want to chime in on their adventures? Or do you have friends or family members who are "nomads?" If you do, your comments would be fun to hear.

Anyway, when my wife and I lived in OR in the late 90s, we considered getting an RV. Our family is "scattered" here, there, and everywhere. Four daughters and six siblings surprisingly in ten states. And the longest state spread goes from OR to FL. But health and job circumstances brought us back to the Midwest, and any RV stayed in OR.

One of my cousins and her husband liquidated their land-based real estate and most of their "stuff" when they retired and bought a very large (don't know footage, but LARGE) fifth wheeler and some kind of humongous pickup truck to tow it. They still spend short stints with their kids from time to time, but the biggest part of their year, they're all over the place - AZ, TX, CO, FL.
300-400 miles per day when they're moving from Point A to Point B, then they set roots for 6-12 weeks at a time.
Lots of planning involved and not completely without risks - last winter, this cousin was at an RV Community dance and got tangled up in her own flip-flops, fell and broke her hip on the dancefloor. Between first-responder/ transport time / Emergency Room / Hospital Admitting, she spent close to 24 hours before finally getting the necessary surgery to fix things up. Freak accident, but still...
There's something about it that's kind of cool and appealing, but I don't think I could do it for the long term. Definitely not something to do alone, I wouldn't think.

Ive got a 38 foot Montana 5th wheel. I store it inside so the sun doesnt eat it up. We have used it a few times but havent in 2.5 years. My wife has a carehome and shes currently trying to sell it. Its a 24/7 business and she hasnt had anyone she could count on to run it while leaving town. She hasnt for those 2.5 years. As soon as it sellls we have talked about trips to Texas again as we have made those before and had a great time.Love to make it down there when JEBar is in the area so we could get together.

A very good friend just bought a new RV and plans to sell his house in the spring to set off on an adventure across America with his wife. They are so very much looking forward to it! They'll take it on a shakedown cruise in January when they head to Florida for a few weeks.

I go to the city a couple of times a year but that's about it. More than enough for me.

We generally don't go there. Except the airport to pick up family members for the the holidays. Even then we sometimes ask them to take the commuter train from the airport to the nearest local stop.

I WORK in the RV industry - I hear it, see it, experience it all from a dealer standpoint!

I'll remember that. Wife and I bat the idea around for fun some times. One day we might get serious.

If ya ever do give me a call for a serious, no-nonsense one-on-one before you decide on anything.

Nice thought. My wife and I have discussed, and investigated some travel trailers. I think we may rent one first and see if it may work for us. I like the idea. But, a trial run may tell the story.

I would be more than happy to offer my 'services' to anyone interested in RV ownership.
RV owner counseling and advisement is one of the 'hats' I wear on the job!

anyone with or without much experience RV'ing would be wise to take advantage of such an offer .... fulltiming is very different from recreational camping .... I seriously doubt that anyone or any agency has a clue as to the number of folks who full-time .... my second career was in the RV industry, sales, transport, teaching people how to select and use their campers .... folks can travel from NC to LA on a Moped but that doesn't mean its designed for such use ..... the same is true with RV's .... we travel in ours 6 - 8 months a year .... we've seen some really wonderful country and made many good friends in traveling through all of the lower 48 .... I've been retired from the business for several years but hope to actively travel for many to come .... as offered by Mistered, I'd be happy to assistance to folks who may be seeking info
