I think its a fitting tribute for the Bison to join the Bald Eagle as a national symbol ..

Now, the bison is about to become the first national mammal of the United States. The National Bison Legacy Act, which designates the bison as the official mammal of the United States.

The bison, which will join the bald eagle as a national symbol, represents the country’s first successful foray into wildlife conservation. Lobbying for the official mammal designation was a coalition of conservationists; ranchers, for whom bison are business; and tribal groups, such as the InterTribal Buffalo Council, which wants to “restore bison to Indian nations in a manner that is compatible with their spiritual and cultural beliefs and practices.” "

It does put a strange twist on it doesn't it? Having eaten bison I wouldn't want to give that up. Yet I don't want to be disrespectful either.

I believe it honors an animal to be food. This may sound a bit weird, but I've made it known to my family members that I want a green burial (no embalming; at sea would be best) so that my body will return to the very food chain that kept me alive.

I think that it is a good idea for the bison to be a national symbol too.

I do NOT believe in embalming myself. I never did. I believe in a quick cremation as the law allows (24 hours or so depending on the circumstances.) or in a quick burial even if a small/simple and Invitation Only memorial service OR more elaborate memorial service is held at a later date by the ocean, in the mountains, woods, family burial site, church, temple, mosque, etc. depending on the DECEASED WISHES.

A lot of people (Relatives or friends or an executor who has NO understanding of the deceased person since there was no GOOD communication between the two people!) do what they want to do even if the Deceased Person would not have wanted a SHOW made out of something (Funeral, wedding, etc.) or people who didn't give a squat about them when they were ALIVE or dying and/or when they die... they come out of the woodwork or make a pity party show as a relative (?!?) or a friend (?!?). You get my drift about these matters as most adults do.

My ashes are going to be scattered up in the Yaak region of NW Montana (Right below British Columbia, Canada.) where my late husband's ashes are scattered.

Now, if I was not in Montana and IF he and I had moved 'back' to the East Coast where I born/raised from 'his' Great Lakes region and he had not died in his 50's in the house that we built and lived in for all of those years in the GL region, he and I would be scattered in the ocean.

My MT husband's ashes will be scattered up in the Yaak region of NW MT in the same beautiful spot too.

I see nothing wrong with a burial at sea (Body intact.) if you are not cremated first if it is handled properly.

I always made my cremation wishes known as my late husband did. His arrangements were made before his cancer death back in the GL region. My direct cremation arrangements were paid in full and made within one year after I moved out west. My MT husband's arrangements are paid in full too.

So the DIRECT and simple cremation wishes are known by all pertinent people verbally, written down, updated and not only written in my (His will too.) WILL at the lawyer's office.

I have a couple of prayers, a couple of Bible verses and the Nicene Creed written out to be said at the scattering site too. I want NO funeral home deal or body showing. NO Church Memorial Service has to be held for me since most of the people that I know are back on the East Coast, a few in the GL region may still live there but not many or they are already dead or in bad health.

That's what I always tell people when they ask "how are you?".
I tell them my wife says I'm better than nothing.

What we need to remember about the Bison being slaughtered & they were: Is it was santioned & supported by the Govt. The govt. even supplied .50-70 cartridges to hunters. The idea was to wipe out the Bison which was the leading food, tent, clothing, supply of the Plains Indians. It wasn't done by sport hunters so we can largely blame the good old U.S. Govt for it. They suggested & subsidised it.
Not sport hunters.
We need to remember this, the media won't tell us.

Buffalo burgers are what I usually get when I stop at Cabela's, I just had one on Saturday! Lettuce,tomato, onion and a plate of fries, it just hits the spot!

I have western history books with photos of trains carrying wealthy easterners and shooting hundreds of buffalo from flat deck rail cars. High power rifles and just take as many down as you can. Frank is correct; no buffalo = no plains Indians. That was the mandate.

Put the Bison on the $20 bill.

Speaking of Bison, we live 3 hours from Yellowstone Nat. Park, at last count I think it was Bison 5 tourists 0. That is for tourist tossing Bison style!
They are still dangerous to the uncautious.
