Miss T has been whining for the past month that I need a haircut. It's not that long, it's just that for most of our marriage, I have either been in uniform, or worked for agencies that... well... were of that type. She grew used to seeing me with a "cop" cut of some type. Not necessarily a high and tight like the Corps, but very short and neat.

Since I retired, I let it get longer, never touches my collar, or over my ears, but somtimes as much as almost two inches on top when combed over. She then takes to calling me "Shaggy" and asking me where Scooby got to.

This morning, tired of nagging, and sweating, I took the clippers and my razor and a half hour at the sink... summer cut. Miss T calls it the cue ball look. This she likes. . I like it too, shave the dome every couple days. Cooler in VA's humid high temp summer weather. Hair never gets in your eyes, never get hat hair, a cow lick, or have a bad hair day.

I come out of the bathroom and she smiles. Then she looks thoughtful.
"About that goatee..." she says...

Sigh

We will have to call you Kojak. Have you ordered the tootsie pops yet?

Cool (literally). For me, it's a good cut, Marine.

I was about the only one in my Air Force flight during boot camp that didn't mind the burr haircut. As a kid, my Dad always gave the "burr" look to me and my two brothers. I think it is healthier for the scalp, and there is no real daily care needed for that cut.

The real irony (for me) was when I got to Tech Training. Several from my boot flight were there, too. They watched as my hair grew back faster than anyone else! Yup, they were not very happy with me.

I get my hair cut 3 times a year, need it or not.

I always joked that I'd grow my hair long when I retired. When it touches my ears, it bothers me. When it gets longish in the back and touches the back of my neck, it bothers me. I don't tell Miss T, because I always like her to think that she "won" with her whining about "I need a haircut..." when I break down and get a trim in the winter, or shave it all off in the summer.

I tried to let mine grow out fairly long when I retired, didn't mind the length in the back but hair in my eyes bothered me and it takes a long time to get long enough to tie back, also takes a lot more time to wash and dry.

Now I keep it a inch or 2 on the top and very short sides and back. I've thought about shaving it all off but I hate shaving, usually only shave once a week.

I let mine grow until it bothers me, then I get a cut that is one finger wide in length on the side and back and two fingers wide in length on the top. Roughly an 8 week cycle.

I'd do the tootsie pops but I'm on a diet.

When I retired from the Reserves, I figured I would either grow my hair or my beard. The beard won out, although I got tired of it after about a year.

I don't get my hair cut as often as I should now, although it doesn't grow as fast, or cover as much ground, as it used to.

At age 54, I've got every hair I've ever had (which is a ton!) and it grows as fast as it ever did. Nonetheless, I get buzz cuts.

A recent barber told me he'd love to have three or four of his pickiest customers sitting in the room when I stepped into the chair and told him to hit me all over with the No. 1 1/2 guard. In high school (the long-hair days of the '80s), one told me that he should charge me double the price for all the wear and tear his equipment had to endure to cut my hair. Another once told me that I had enough hair to cover four men's heads.

Maybe I'll grow it out again someday, but probably not. It gets so thick, so quickly, that's it's impossible to deal with.

Back when I was in uniform and getting haircuts for duty, if it was a new barber, I'd ask if they knew a cop cut. If not, I'd tell them to cut the back and sides with no guard, the top with a number one. I usually just showed them my ID pic..
