comments from folks who have used PayPal or chosen not to use PayPal would be appreciated .... how secure is the credit card and other info you give then

We don't leave our credit card info on the account. On several occasions when we first got the pay pal account, ms. T noticed unexplained denied $1 charges to the credit card. She called the credit union and they told her it was someone testing the account... if the charge had gone thru, it would have been "on". They identified the source of the attempt as the paypal account.

She adds the card info to the account when she uses it, then immediately removes it again.

I have found Paypal to be a totally secure means of buying/paying - i.e. I have used it on numerous occasions with Skinner purchases. The problem with Paypal, however, is that they have a company policy not to allow firearms purchases thru their system. If they find out you are buying or selling a firearm (any firearm not just AR-15s) they will deny the transaction. I don't think they a friend of the 2nd Amendment...

I resisted getting Paypal for a long time but last year I wanted some custom floor mats from a company in Shanghai that only took Paypal so I signed up. I haven't used it a lot but I have used it a few times when it is available. I like that you aren't giving your credit card info out to multiple companies. Haven't had any problems with them yet. Used their dispute procedure with a vendor who wouldn't respond to my emails about a defective item, when my email was sent to them through Paypal they were fairly quick to respond.

Someone hack my account and put a $5K charge on it.

I had to do all the work to prove it wasn't me.

Never again will I use them.

I have avoided using it. In the pass, it was considered unsecure. So, I have not bothered.

There is a 100%-guaranteed secure way to use paypal -- don't.
When I've purchased Skinner Sights, I simply sent a check to them rather than using paypal.....my choice worked fine.

info appreciated .... several comments addressed my concern over protecting credit card info .... really gives me something to think about

I don't have a Paypal account, but I've used Paypal 'pay as guest' when PayPal was the only payment method. PayPal pays the merchant and billed my credit card. We have a local online one person bakery merchant that only takes PayPal as well as a local online gadget store (no physical store front).

I have used paypal for years with ebay. It bills my credit card. Now several other merchants take it too. I'm knocking on wood, but I've never had a problem in the 16 years I have been on ebay. I do remember at first that it charged a dollar to my bank account to make sure it went through a few times. It always came out right. I had a problem one time with a merchant and started the process of a problem and that merchant soon made good. I don't remember if it was paypal or ebay, but without either, I would have been holding an empty bag. My experiences with paypal have been fine. I have choices of how I want to pay and choices of where I want it delivered to built right into the account.

I've had a PayPal account for over 10 yrs and never had a problem.

Never had Paypal, not interested in getting it. But as Mags has mentioned, I will use Paypal as a guest when offered, where it just charges your Credit Card, which has no Fees involved.

I remember selling something many years ago and the guy asked if I had Paypal. Back then I said "What's Paypal"? He said it how you get your money, but they charge a Fee. I said "Who pays the Fee, me or you"? He said "you". That's all I needed to know, lol.

I'm not even sure how it works. Do y'all still need to set up a separate bank account?

You have to have a registered or as they call it a "linked bank account". I only use it because a lot of my vendors have it as an option and it's the easiest way to order pads and other supplies for working on wind instruments.
