I got a phone call yesterday that just made my day.week.month...yes, probably my year!
My uncle called to tell me that he closed on a piece of property on Friday afternoon.
It is situated along side the old Wabash/Erie canal in the middle of Indiana and boasts 50 acres of dense woods.

There are remnants of the old canal tow-path still present on the property.
There are deer track everywhere, and the seller said the property is right now "crawling with wild turkey".

Now, for the absolute bestest part,
Uncle put 4 names on the deed, his, mine, and that of my two younger brothers.
He told us that we have use of the property now, for hunting, camping...
My brothers and I will be responsible for the annual property taxes.
When uncle passes, it belongs to me and my brothers.

I now have hunting property that belongs to ME!
I've hunted other peoples property my entire hunting career because I had no other choice.
That has now changed.

I've never had the opportunity to hunt turkey.
I've never had access to property that supported turkey, until now.

Now I can't wait for the weather to change so I can go set up some trail cams and see what we have...

Excellent to get your own "hunting property".....what a once-in-a-lifetime gift!

It's about 1 hour away from my house.
Further than I'd like, but convenient enough.
I'm a member on another forum local to me, where I've been told someone who hunts the general area is going to put me in touch with the local conservation officer.
I think it may be a good idea to introduce myself.

Descriptions are easy, and I'll be sure to oblige.
Pictures could be another issue. I'm not really a pictures kind of guy.
I don't have a smart phone. I still use a flip-phone.
My phone bills are only $25 p/month AFTER taxes!

I'm NOT I.T. savvy, and know nothing about down/up loading pictures, let alone hosting or posting.
The need just never seemed urgent enough to me to concern myself with.
In the past, I have received help by help I mean they did it) to post one or two photos online in order to facilitate a sale...

Some day I may get a smart phone, and then learn to post pics.
For now, it's just not really high on my priorities list.

I appreciate a good picture as much as the rest, so I don't want to lead you guys/gals on.
Pictures probably won't be anytime soon.

understood on technology .... I still use a flip phone .... I take pictures with a relatively cheap digital camera and transfer them to my computer .... from there they can be posted on this forum

That is just plain awesome. I can appreciate what a gold mine you now have. Congrats. Back in my hunting days, finding a place to hunt was next to impossible at times. Some years we never did find a place and had to hunt very heavily used public lands, but that got so dangerous, we decided to sit out some seasons for our own safety.

I'm a general construction contractor by trade, and for the last 15+ years I've hunted property that belongs to customers of mine.
I have had the great fortune of a fantastic relationship with three separate customers that all live beside each other on the same road.

Combined, the properties amass almost 15 acres.
They abut each other, so I have had 15 acres in a straight line, but it is long and narrow, and on a steep hillside.
The longest shot I've been offered on this property is about 40 yards, tops.
Between foliage and terrain, a longer shot is just not feasible.

My new property will offer at least a 600 yard range if I do some clearing.
This is a whole new adventure opening up for me.

Congratulations. That is a very nice gift your uncle has given you and your brothers. It's very difficult in many areas to get a good hunt on property you don't own. Public land is often crawling with more hunters than game in very populated areas around me.

I like a good description now and then. Good luck on the turkeys. That's something I haven't hunted really.

Today was a great day.
Worked a half day, so I accomplished something...

My Big Boy steel came home from a very short vacation at Rice Lake today, and I finally got the chance to wander through my(our) new property with both of my co-owner brothers.
Today was the first time the middle brother has had a chance to see his new land.

We strolled around for a little over an hour, just introducing ourselves to the landscape and boundaries.
We discovered something new, and wonderful about our new property.
The hillside described in the o.p. has a small, but active spring running out of the hill and into a natural valley.
The valley is shallow at the foot, but gets deeper at the top.
The neat part is, I think we can put in a few small retarding dams with spillways into this ravine.
I think we could create maybe 4 or 5 small ponds, tiered down the hillside.

The bottom one might only be 3 or 4 feet deep, but maybe 50 or 60 feet across.
Next one up could go 30-40 feet across, but as deep as 10 feet on the deep end.
The next one up looks like it would be a bit smaller in diameter than the last, but still 8-10 feet deep.
I am envisioning a cascading waterfall comprised of 4 or 5 ponds.
That should draw in some game.

After a good tiring romp through our new property, I became the first of the new property owners to fire a shot on the grounds.
I took out my .327 rifle that just returned from repair.
I sent it back because of light primer strikes.
The repair note simply said, "Replaced bolt and tuned".
I only ran 10 rounds of Federal American Eagle 100gr JSP's, but not a light strike in the bunch.

Easy work day, got my rifle back, and got to spend time with both of my brothers at the same time.
Got to know my new property a little better, and found out my rifle is fixed! (I'm being optimistic).
It just doesn't get much better than this!


Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket...
