Did anyone read this report about finding the WWII USS Juneau destroyer 76 years after it sank during battle? Interesting story on the difficulty of this task. And to think how remarkably minute were the chances of ever finding the sunk ship in the vastness of the Solomons. Anyway, it is also a stark reminder of the many brave Navy servicemen who didn’t come home from that war.

After I read the report, I again watched a favorite movie of mine, titled "The Fighting Sullivans." I always thought this was powerful, moving story about the five Sullivan brothers, who were lost on the USS Juneau during this battle. What a true-life story this movie told!

Coincidentally when I stepped out of the haircut shop yesterday, I saw a car in the parking lot with a personalized MO license tag, veteran-issued, that read “ENDWAR.” If only that thought would ever really happen!

Yeah, how would you like to be the officer and chaplain that delivered that news to the Sullivans. I remember Shelby Foote saying in the Civil War documentary how a similar thing happened in that war. To keep spirits up men small towns would be kept together. In a situation like Fredericksburg or Gettysburg, that could have catastrophic results, and sometimes did.

Thank you for the post. Having served in the Navy myself, it is nice to know that someone is still seeking to honor those who went before us. Citizens of this Country exercise great liberties that some seems to take for granted. I attribute it to not availing oneself to the events of the world. But, there are some who acknowledge the efforts. I recall having dinner with my father and family. When I asked for the check, I was informed a gentleman had already paid bill. It was 6 of us. When I inquired who, I was directed to a man behind me. I went to thank him and, he informed me that he notice my father's hat with Korean Conflict on it and wanted to express his appreciation. My father was always proud of serving.

I think he may have learned something from this story. He told me that his two brothers decided to go into different branch of their service to increase their chances of someone coming home to assist their mother. So, one went into the Navy (my father), one went into the Army, and the other went the Air Force. Even though my father got hit by shrapnel while on the gun crew, all three of them made it back. I think I got my paying attention to details from him (a naval standard). He passed December 18, 2016, and mother passed December 19, 2016. We had their service together. Since father was so proud of being a veteran, I arranged for a military funnel service, and both of their remains were laid to rest in a veteran's cemetery. Nonetheless, thanks for the story!
