I need a new camera

Post by Sir Henry » Fri Feb 23, 2018 12:57 pm

Don't adjust your screen folks. The camera lens is bent and it will not focus all the time. I spend about four hours yesterday taking pictures of all 19 of my Henrys and I didn't like a single picture. Most were out of focus. So now I'm faced with buying a new camera. I just don't want to spend the money but don't like not being able to take pictures either. So what I need everyone to be is my enablers. Please encourage me to spend lots of money and get a really good camera.

I'm in the market too. I have 3 mirrorless cameras but my longest lens is a 200mm. I need a nice super-zoom point and shoot for long range targets.

I say go for it. I posted the same thing some time ago here.

You guys were a big help. My needs were different. But the inexpensive camera You folks steered me to is great. I'm still using it and we have actually bought another for my wife.

I can't give advice on which nice camera to buy. But will for sure say go ahead and find a good one and buy it. You use them and we like your trip pictures! Get a new camera and show us some pics from a mountain hike!

I know that you have some impressive photo journalist skills. And that you are formally trained in Photography. But from what I have seen of your photographic journey on this and a couple of other forums, you have done an excellent job with budget conscious gear. Some of us spend a lot of money on a camera and have less than half the success taking great shots that you do.
Given what I know about you.... You like to travel, hike and climb mountains, being outdoors in the elements, and oh yeah...you seem to like shooting Henry firearms. I am thinking maybe a camera that is compact, few moving parts, and adaptable. If I were in the market for a camera to replace my DSLR I would look hard at mirrorless systems. Something similar to this. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... gital.html

If money is no object buy a Leica rangefinder M series, made in Germany. Their glass is phenomenal. I use to shoot film with a Leica M6 and kick myself for trading it for an Olympus DSLR. Someday I will shoot with a Leica again.

Im with RR ya I know thats a scary thought but buy another Henry. Phone cameras are good enough for me. You can spend any amount you want on one but its just a picture and it will never do anything but give you an idea. Pictures never do anything but give you a memory of being there. Theres nothing like being there in person.

This looks like a good camera. The next time I am out I'll head to my local camera store.

You actually still have local camera stores? We used to have up to 3 local camera stores but online stores put them out of business long ago, they just couldn't compete with online prices. Also so many different cameras and lenses are available now that they would not be able to have anywhere near the selection that a online store like B&H or Adorama has.

If I was in the market for a new camera I'd do a lot of research on some of the mid range mirrorless cameras. Another neat new feature is automatic face detection and Eye Detection AF.

The Fuji X-T2 looks to have a really nice focusing system but it's $1600 for just the body.

Our camera store went out of business a few years ago. There is an independent department store with a photography department. That's as close as it gets. Lots of hot air there and I rarely buy anything there as a result.

That Sony looks good. Let us know what you do. Good luck.

I may buy two cameras. A point and shoot for hiking and then a nice camera for indoor work.

I think DSLR cameras are the most versatile. And, if you take the time to really learn to use them, they really shine. Get a good one- probably Nikon or Canon- and don’t skimp on lenses. The “kit” lenses that come with the cameras are okay, but the “pro” lenses are worth every dollar they cost. I don’t know how much processing you do, but DSLR images will “take” a lot more Photoshopping than images from point and shoot cameras.

I like the way you think. Just like a photographer. I learned that lesson from my neighbor at camp. He's a professional photographer and that's what he does. I have two DSLRs and two point and shoots. One set up in each camera bag. Why two? I got one DSLR as a "gift" from my son. All but the lesser DSLR are Canon.

It figures photographers would think alike. Keep us posted on what you get.

I have the nikon d3100, and although I've started to have a few problems just recently, it probably just needs a good internal cleaning.
I have taken some amazing shots with it... magazine quality.
