Progressive eyeglass lenses?

My last eye check, the optometrist heavily recommended progressive lenses. I just got mine last night. I understand that there is a definite adjustment period. I like some aspects of them. I no longer have that middle region that will not focus clearly with either the top of my glasses or my bifocal portion. I am finding the blurry area along the sides of the new glasses a little disconcerting.

Anybody else use them, and what is your opinion of them?

guess I'm toooo old .. .. OK, no guessing about it, there is no doubt about it .. .. I've worn traditional trifocals for decades .... a few years ago I let myself be talked into trying progressive lenses .... horrible mistake .... wearing them literally made me sick .... I ended up needing to have a traditional set made, problem solved .... now that's just me, hopefully if you go with them they will work well for you

I've had them for quite a while. They're fine for most things, but I was having a little issue getting them "lined up right" for shooting, both wingshooting and occasionally scope focus. Last year, I "redesigned" a pair, with some help from the fitter at the Optometrist's office, by reducing the close focus area and making a bigger sweet spot for distance. It helped my wingshooting quite a bit, and I think it helped with the rifle scopes, too. I now have enough pairs of glasses to customize one a bit, but those aren't the best for reading .

Have had them for many, many years. It does take time to adjust to them and we're talking more than week or two, here. Be patient, though. In time, using them becomes completely automatic and you won't even notice. Way, way better than the old stuff.

I'm doing OK with them, just not really happy with them right now. I will give them a few weeks until I make my final decision. I will keep my old pair in the car when I go to work, just in case I have major problems with them at work.

Tried them years ago when I first got bifocals and hated the narrow range of close up correction. Also tried some trifocals several years ago and didn't care for them either, seems like your constantly moving your head up and down to find that mid-range area. Luckily I have pretty good mid-range vision without my glasses so I can either look over the top of them or take them off.

I'm near-sighted and I've worn glasses since I was ten years old. The reading prescription was added when I was in my 40's. It seems I've always worn glasses and I've owned dozens of them. Currently I have four pairs that I wear daily: inside pair that is delicate, an outdoor pair that I refer to as my chainsaw glasses, sunglasses, and shooting glasses.

I've have always had progressive readers so it is natural to me. But I can notice the difference between pairs. My inside glasses are very expensive with a thin design and feature no distortion. Looking through them and moving my finger I can track it right to the edge and even beyond with no distortion. When it goes from being viewed through the glasses to seeing it in real it does not jump. All my other glasses are not like that.

I only wore reading glasses until a few years ago. I got no line bifocals. The optometrist told me get used to moving my head to get the glasses to focus properly. It's true. I still watch my step going down stairs. I'm used to them. They were my first real glasses, so by two weeks, I was doing pretty well with them. I have about four pair now. The most expensive are the best, go figure, and they are Ray Ban sunglasses in my prescription. They are great.

Yep I do the same with my Progressive sun glasses. I have them drop what I call the horizon line about 4mm. This way your normal vision while driving and outside is the distance lens. Normally progressives have an hourglass shape. The bottom is close up reading. The normal small spot in the middle where they put the dot when fitting you is the arms length or computer lens. And the top is distance.

I have them fit me as normal for my inside glasses. Then on my sunglasses I have them do the same. Then add another dot just a bit lower than normal and get rid of the normal dot. Some places don't want to deal with this. Find another place.

I also get my sunglasses in bronse polarized instead of grey. They are not as dark and work like ski goggle in rain and fog. I actually see better with them. Also good for not having to carry a clear pair for a quick trip into a store or such. Not so dark I can't see inside with them on.

For several years now I've been wearing the frameless polycarbonite lens with this titanium wire earpieces. They are so light and comfortable. And very strong actually. i just had 2 new pairs made a few weeks ago. I buy the best I can afford. Better lens make a huge difference.

When I 1st got them a few years ago it did take some getting used to moving my head. 1st time at work going to the head I almost fell as they made me dizzy. But it passed quickly.

Still not the best for shooting for me. I have an older pair of lined bifocals I use to shoot with sometimes. Bigger field of view.

I have been wearing progressive lenses for the past 23 years. The first pair took some getting used to Depth perception was weird, and walking through doorways freaked me out. The top of the doorway seemed to tilt in, but since then no problems. I do from time to time notice that if I tilt a document that I am reading away from me at an angle it seems distorted. wider at the top than the bottom. Shooting is not a problem, I tend to tilt my head back just a bit to get the front sight in focus. Once I have lined up the front site with the rear I forget about the rear sight, then focus on the target through the top of the lens. Then hold everything for the split second it takes to focus on the front sight. If the target looks like a blurry ball sitting on top of the front post I squeeze the trigger. I do see much more clearly using peep sites than open buckhorn sites.

I just had my eyes checked and will be ordering new glasses in the next few days. My frames are similar to yours and I will be ordering the 1.74 high index polycarbonate lens. It is what I have now and I'm just replacing 14 year old glasses.

Most chain places don't sell many of the frameless anymore. Not this weeks fashion of Roy Orbison and Elvis glasses with the jeweled earpieces.
I didn't like those big old plastic things when that's all there was when I was a little kid in the '60's.

Since I retired I don't have non medical vision insurance anymore. So I have to pay for my glasses. Bad thing is that it's expensive. Good thing is I have no restrictions on what I can get, So I buy the best I can afford and try to take care of them. And I buy what I like.

Well, it's been a week and a half and I have pretty much gotten used to them. I think I will stick with the progressive for now. I definitely see clearer at intermediate distances with them.

Just for info, I'm old school and will continue to get glass lenses until my prescription gets too heavy, or they quit making them in glass. Glass is so much better for clarity, scratch resistance, and they don't pick up dust, like plastic. I can clean them with anything short of sandpaper. I've had a couple people freak out when I tear off a section of the brown industrial paper towels and cleaned my glasses. That's something you can do with glass, but don't try it with plastic. The optical techs look at you funny when you order glass. I had one tell me that plastic was better in every way to glass. Really? I asked them how many SLR lenses are made from plastic. Deer in the headlights.

Here's another vote for Silouettes I have 3 pairs of glasses using their frames, and really like them; recently replaced the photo gray lenses in my oldest set of frames, which are as good as new. I have a particularly (peculiarly? ) narrow bridge of my nose, and they're by far the best fitting frames I've found. Last I checked, they're made in Austria, and seem to be indestructible .

Mine are made in Austria but I also bought another pair of Ray Bans made in the U.S.A. Some Ray Bans are made in China.

My new ones are also the Silloutte's! I'm liking them. Got a wake up call today. I was going somewhere that I didn't want to take the new glasses. So I took the old ones. They are beat up with scratched coatings. But I was shocked at how much worse I see through them after only a couple of weeks with the new ones!

I use to wear Oliver Peoples because they offered a saddle bridge, I never liked the nose pads, but the Oliver Peoples are hard to find locally. I have been wearing Sillouettes for the past 5 years and really like their lightness and durability.
