A friend of the wife texted me this afternoon and asked if I thought I could make her a display case for her father's flag. She buried him last week. He served in the Navy. That was an easy yes. She asked what I would charge.
Well... I told her... some of my more difficult designs take more time, and are more labor intensive, and depending on your choice of woods, the more exotics are much higher of course... in the end, it all boils down to you. Inlaid challenge coins, divided display areas, linings.. all add to the costs.

But I can tell you... for a friend of miss T for her veteran father...


No labor, you supply the glass, the flag, and any coins...
I'll make it happen.

Of course... I'm a little slow.

I have done these for friends and family and rarely charge. I don't normally do the fancy ones any more unless they ARE for family, but the last curly cherry one I did several years ago, went for either $300 or $350, and the guy was thrilled.

To think it will be honored on a mantle for perhaps generations is a wonderful thing, BoM

The least I can do for fellow vets... I can't do it for all of them, but I can for the "inner circle."

This is my original design for the medals and flag display. The box was made from a chunk of firewood I tossed aside when we were splitting wood for the wood stove, and left to dry for a year... run thru the band saw, and then ... nearly every tool in the shop. You pull the box feet from the top, and remove four screws and the top to pull the front glass and access the contents. Not that you'd really need to. I made one like this for my son in law in Curly Cherry, one in Oak for a WWII bomber pilot when he passed, and a couple more along the way. I haven't changed the design much. The son in law's box:

Good on ya Marine. For me if had your talent I would do the same. Matter of fact I was thinking that while reading your post. Not only would I do it for a fellow vet I would do it for the feeling it would give me to be able to do it for a fellow vet. Al

Thanks guys, just my way of giving back, especially to those that came before us. I enjoy the work in the shop, and donating the work I can, is the least I can do.

I met with the Friend of the Wife's on Saturday. She brought the Flag she had received from the Funeral Home. It was a surprise. In all my previous cases, Cremation Flags given to the family have been standard 3x5 representative flags the same size as the flags you would fly at home. This was a full size "Funeral Flag" that would have been draped over the casket. Folded, it was much larger than those I am used to working with. Good thing I told her to bring the flag along so I could make a stencil for reference. (She was fine with leaving the flag, but I didn't want to take that responsibility.)

She looked at all the designs I had, but decided to go with a basic triangle box mounted on a base, due to the size of the flag. We will go with either Mahogany or Walnut for the material, depending on what I find in my stash, and she is ordering the challenge coins and the brass plate. Once everything is in, we'll finalize the design and get started.
