Sunday's (Dec 3rd) supermoon to be biggest, brightest full moon of 2017 .... A supermoon is a full moon that falls near or on perigee, the point in the moon’s orbit where it is closest to the Earth. This causes it to appear slightly larger and brighter than normal....full moon will rise on Sunday evening shortly after sunset and will be visible all night long, weather permitting....An optical illusion, known as the "moon illusion," will make the moon appear even bigger when it is close to the horizon compared to when it is high in the sky.

Too much cloud cover in our neighborhood tonight, though I would have loved to see it rising over the CT River and try for photos. Another day and year...maybe.

It was beautiful last night. I do like it when it looks enormous, rising above the horizon.

There are going to be two 'supermoons' in January 2018 - one on the 1st, and the other on the 31st. The one on the 31st will have the added bonus of being a total lunar eclipe - a superb sight that is well worth watching.

A full moon or near full moon is not the best time to observe with a telescope - the glare wipes out a lot of detail - but it is a lovely time to observe with a binocular or just your eyes. Yes, it was lovely, this weekend. Enjoyed it.
