What does the 'scrolling' lines in the circle to the left of the thread mean? (as opposed to those that are stationary)

It appears that when a thread has three or more pages it activates the scrolling.
Load on Sunday and Shoot all Week.......okay it's a Mare's Leg I will reload on Wednesday. ;)

And it appears that if it has a star in it, you've already commented in the thread. If it's red, there are new posts; otherwise, if it's blue, there aren't any.
