hope all of our folks are well away from the area where Hurricane Harvey is due to come ashore later today .... over the years the area north of Houston on Lake Conroe has become very dear to us ..... the projected level of rain is nothing short of amazing

You got that right on the projected level of rain. The news report I saw last evening said at least 18" of rain dump all along the coast line, with potential of up to 30" total ---Unbelievable!!! We had a mere 4" here in KCMO over last weekend, and that caused a lot of flooding and problems everywhere. Prayers lifted for those in the path of Harvey.....hope they can all get away safely.

We're prepared here as much as we can be. Hopefully the water comes intermittently enough to drain off. We almost got water in the house during the "Memorial Day Flood" of 2016. It came up to the edge of the wheel chair ramp before receding. Not much we can do if it does I guess except to deal with the aftermath.

they just announced that Harvey has been elevated to a Level 4 hurricane

because of Harvey, my wife and daughter just finished taking 5 vehicles over to fill them with gasoline .... not that we expect any storm related issues with infrastructure in our area; in fact, none is expected .... a substantial portion of our country's refining and storage facilities are located in the Corpus Christi area .... if as projected, they have an 11' or better storm surge, the damage to all structures could be significant .... if so, supplies will be disturbed for a while and prices will rise quickly ...worse case, we have a good bit of gas on hand that will be burned all too quickly

This represents the absolute worse case of a CAT 4 hitting a front and then stalling. That area of the country has soil (clay) that does not drain well, and this thing is just gonna sit there and POUR.

Honestly the only good news here is the resourcefulness and toughness of the people of Texas.

so far this morning, the news reports indicate that things are bad, that they are going to get worse, and that so far, conditions are developing as anticipated .... Rockport seems to be hard hit

An early morning weather report I read shows quite conflicting approaches to this hurricane by TX officials. Here are just two of them:

The lesser threat.

After Gov. Greg Abbott urged more people to flee, Houston authorities told people to remain in their homes and recommended no widespread evacuations.
In a Friday press conference that addressed Houston officials' decision to not have a voluntary or mandatory evacuation, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said there might be a "greater danger" in having people who don't need to be evacuated on roads that could flood.
Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said that because the hurricane was not taking direct aim at Houston, the city's primary concern was heavy flooding.
"We are not having a hurricane," said Emmett, the top elected official for the county, which encompasses Houston. "We are having a rain event."

The greater threat.

Earlier Friday, Rockport Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Rios had offered ominous advice, telling the station that those who chose to stay put rather than evacuate the area "should make some type of preparation to mark their arm with a Sharpie pen," implying doing so would make it easier for rescuers to identify them.


Since I don't have the experience living in a hurricane-prone area (the tornado belt is enough, thank you), in my mind I'm not tough enough as many Texas folk have been identified. I think I'd quickly board up my home (if time), then asap leave the area.

unfortunately, when it comes to Hurricanes, conflicting projections are all to common ....that's a fact we know all to well in eastern NC .... where we live, we've experienced some that were devastating (with Hurricane Fran we were without power for 4 hours short of 2 full weeks) .... our home is built in an area where flooding isn't an issue .... loss of power and other utilities can be ..... consequently, we've never evacuated but if the right projections were to come along we would load up our camper and head inland .... we do have 2 gasoline powered generators and the ability to run a well pump on one of them .... we most certainly do treat them with all due respect

I hope everybody in the affected areas manages to stay safe, with minimal damage to property. It must be a terrifying experience to come face to face with Nature at its worst.

Well, we've escaped the ravages of Harvey's winds but not the water. The water level is already to the foundation and the car and truck in the driveway have the back tires underwater. The rain bands shown on the radar show no let up for hours so I expect to have water in the home. I hope it can be measured in inches and not feet.

early morning news reports indicate that, as anticipated, Harvey is ambling around, dumping massive amounts of rain as he passes .... video shows that Houston is now experiencing flooding .... I can't help but wonder how far inland one would have to travel to get out of the storm

So glad that the dire predictions just prior to Harvey's landfall did not happen, and that it has reduced to a tropical storm. Bad enough having such an excessive amount of rainfall. Cannot imagine what it is like.

A week ago we had some heavy-duty thunderstorms in our area, but nothing comparable to this storm. Still, after getting +4" rain here, which was buffeted around by heavy winds, for the first time in five years my garage had flooding. 'Twas totally unexpected.

Shakey Jake, I really hope you get a very, very low level of water in the house, if any. Best to you as you go through this time.

P.S. An interesting happening this morning. My upstairs apt neighbor is loading her final furniture/boxes into a U-Haul trailer. I don't know what city, but she is moving to Texas today. As big as the state of TX is, I'm trusting it will be away from the storm area!

Water is almost into the home. It hasn't made it in yet. As of 6 this morning we've had 19+ inches of rain with 8.33 inches in four hours this morning. The problem is that even if it lets up the bayous and drainage systems are full. There's no place for the water to go.

The TV coverage is horrifying. People's lives will be changed by this storm in a significant way. I hope your losses are minimal and that your life returns to "normal" asap.

Well, took my mind off things for a bit by reloading some .40 S&W. Water has not come in......yet....we've got a bit of a reprieve. Don't know how long that will last. Things are REALLY BAD in the SE Texas area. Sugar Land is a suburb of Houston just to the southwest. I'll keep you informed.

We're 4 hours from Houston. It started raining off and on today. One good rain, the rest has been light showers. Shakey, I hope you're home doesn't flood. I saw on the news, one intersection in Houston has 15-16 feet of water. It was up to the traffic lights.
