Wow,

This is the second this summer

Do we need to worry about terrorist highjacking tankers and cargo ships and attacking our navy?

Looks like there may again be loss of life, prayers for all............

Like I was just saying over at the other board:

Knowing very little about it myself, but I was just saying this morning, how can there be talk about Driver-less Tractor Trailers out there going coast to coast, but yet we have ships crashing into each other with a full crew aboard to boot ??

Yes RR, Let's remember the men that we lost in our prayers.

I read somewhere that the 4 ships that have hit something or run aground this year are part of the 16 ship system supporting the Aegis ballistic missile defense system for the Pacific Fleet. With N Korea stomping it's heals lately, it's easy to see why this has to be addressed.

Thank you Dennis. I hadn't seen anything on it. It looks like swift action so far and more to come.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the ten missing sailors. My brother, father, grandfathers and their grandfathers have all been sea-going men, so I feel a very close affinity with the sea.

What I don't understand is how, in this day and age of GPS-guided navigation systems, can two ships collide with each other. I know that the Strait of Malacca is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, but this type of incident really should not be happening.

Les, with my considerable experience as the skipper of a 17ft bay boat , I can tell you that all ships transmit an AIS ( Automatic Identification System) becon that identifies them to other ships, much like airliners.

The Navy does not transmit this. They are invisible to the other ships, if in fact those ships are relying on this AIS system.

For this reason, the impetus is usually on the Navy to stay clear, even if they are the "stand on" vessel according to maritime rules, which getting hit on the Port side "usually" indicates (displaying red light).
