Oils and Water Colors

I was looking at some of the pictures in my "Family Album" on photo bucket, and I thought y'all might like this one. It has a pretty cool backstory as well. You see, one of my daughters was in art class and they said that they were going to choose a few of the paintings from the year to send to state competition and the winner would receive a prize. The artwork would then be auctioned off and the money from the state wide auction would help fund the art projects for the coming year's art programs... it was quite an honor... they said.
Jess painted this water and oils painting and the teacher was really impressed with the painting, stretched on the canvas backer, but suggested that we get it framed. I took it to a local framing shop and he said, "$400 in Walnut, $350 in Oak, and I can do it in pine for about $200" He shook his head, "You have to realize, it's a large painting and it will need to be matted."
I took the painting home, her mother matted the painting and I framed it in Black Walnut.

This is NOT a small painting, note that it's leaning against an arm chair when the photo was taken...
The painting won the local contest in it's class and went to State. We were all so proud. It was on display for several days and we drove up to the college where the exhibit was being held to check out all the various artwork. Paintings, sculptures, clay pottery, and the rest.
This photo above doesn't really doesn't do the painting justice. We tried to stay out of the way at the exhibition, but we heard a lot of the comments on the painting from those in the gallery:
"You can see the horses nostrils flaring."
"You can almost feel the strain on the rope."
"You can almost hear the leather creak."
"The figures seem to be IN motion."
As the judges walked thru and placed the Ribbons and announced their decisions, Jessie's painting took first place in it's class at State and was put up for auction. Jess was thrilled when she realized she had won. Then she remembered that they were now going to SELL her painting and all the other kids got to take theirs home.
Jessy Cried.
Her mom Cried.
I cried on the inside, and started to bid on the painting.
I bid off and on All Night Long.
They were open bids, you just wrote your bids at the bottom of the long list of bids until no one bid anymore....
... and they kept bidding.
The painting hangs in her Mother's room, a birthday gift, a Mother's Day Gift? A gift to them both really.
When the time comes,
the painting will pass back ... ah... to the artist. Let us pray that's no time soon.
I "really" helped to fund the Art Programs for the following year. Everyone thought it was a very nice painting. They wouldn't stop bidding. There must have been a lot of Cowboys in the crowd. Or someone was really mean and told them how bad jess's mom wanted that painting. I wasn't going home without it.
