I just did something I haven't done in decades

I just returned from ............ taking a run, for ............ FUN

I used to run in college. Just for fun. I'd run from my dorm to the apartment some of my fraternity brothers rented. It was downhill to their place, about a mile and a half. I would run back and have a diet pepsi. As life went along, about 8 months since college, I haven't run for fun since then. The one exception was when my best friend was in the police academy 20 years ago. He had to run on his own for a two week period when they didn't have physical training. I had two weeks to get myself up to the three or four mile runs we would take. I did it for him, it was not fun. Fast forward to February on vacation in the Bahamas, I had the desire to run as the weather was optimal, but I had no running shoes. I took a mile or so run on the beach. It was paradise and FUN.

More than three decades took a toll for sure. Last July, I lost a total of 100 lbs in 18 months. I used a prescription pill monitored by a specialist and her staff. I am now on maintenance and maintaining the weight. I don't need blood pressure meds anymore and I have the energy and I want to run. Last month I got a great deal on a pair of New Balance running shoes and bought them. Today the weather was just over 50 and sunny in my part of Upstate NY. I put on my new shoes and I did about a mile and a half today. It was up and down hill for two thirds and level for the other third. I actually enjoyed it. :D

Good for you.... I ran a lot in the Corps, mostly individual runs since I was in the AirWing and our time was spent flying, or working to get the helos ready to fly, or fixing the stuff that broke while they were flying. :D We had to run physical fitness tests every quarter, but in our squadrons, if you ran a First Class PFT during the first and third quarter testing, you didn't have to test during second and first quarter testing. I always ran First Class. ;)

I think that all that running in the Corps is the reason my knees are in the crappy shape they are in today... 8-)

Good luck with that Dave.

The furthest I ever ran was to run down a tennis ball. Seems like it would be tough on your joints, though.......

I always have admiration for people that can do something I can not, like run a mile :D

Good for you for loosing the weight. Exercising is part of my life. Right now I'm in training for summer mountaineering. Mount Stuart is the big one for me this year and I want to climb Mount Rainier one more time.

Never been much of a runner. I hated it in high school. Probably because of my size. But I sure dont mind walking. Matter of fact I wouldnt mind doing a walk around some of those islands in the San Juans with SH. Al

I'm impressed, Dave. Running for me was always a short duration experience. Even when I was much younger, whenever I would try to run, like from one end of a basketball court to the other, my side would eventually start to ache so badly that I'd have to stop.

I admire runners for very reason Henry88 expressed. I can't do it; never could. I was once a pretty long distance hiker, going for tens of miles, but for too many reasons to list, even that is out of the question today.

Run Dave, run. I use to run a lot on the farm, chasing cows. My father was not happy with me, one day, he chased me and I cleared 3 strands of barbed wire in a single bound. He said it was a beautiful site to see. I love to walk, hike, but run, no way I would rather stand and fight than run.

I can't run anymore but I can hike and I still do class 4 climbing. I hiked/climbed 3,000 feet of Mount Si today in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 47 seconds. I only time the uphill part as that is what gives me the most exercise with the least amount of impact to my body. Going up is all business but coming down is at a leisure pace. Running downhill gives you no cardio exercise, takes it toll on the knees and overall increases the chances of a face plant.

it appears the time has come to replace my left knee .... tomorrow I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement .... my hope is to get back to where I can go for walks but I can't envision ever running for the sake of running ....

Gene, I'm glad you can still climb. I know you like it so much.

JEBar, I never thought I would do it either. I'll do it when I can, but only for fun.
