I don't know about you guys, but I hate to sell a gun to someone I don't know well. I don't advertise the few I have gotten rid of, I have never been in a rush, and have always asked the buyer to let me know if they ever decide to sell it.

Teaching firearms for so long, shooting competition, I have one... or two.. I could let go of. But I hate to let go. I'd either sell the gun or guns and buy another.. (The 45-70 I don t need but if I sold that competition Glock... ) ... or trade for one I've had my eye on. That stag gripped Single action he won't part with.

Am I the only one that hates to sell the guns...?
Heck, I just had to add a safe.
Shhh... I hid it in my office closet, maybe she won't notice?

I don't hate to sell or gift guns, knives or any other item in my life.

My late husband and my MT husband are like me in that respect.

In fact, we are going through the process of gifting and selling some other things in our lives right now.

Sorry Cate, maybe I wasn't clear in my reasoning.

It's not because of some attachment to the guns, the few that have meaning, I will keep and pass on as appropriate. My problem with selling guns to folks I don't know stems from twenty plus years working in a career in Law Enforcement, in some form or another depending on my health at the time. This includes time as a dispatcher, patrol officer, field training officer, firearms instructor, and time in both firearms transactions and criminal records. I don't want to sell one of my guns to someone who may use it in a crime.

There is always a chance... of course. But selling to someone you know, or highly recommended by someone you know, reduces the chance. I have found that "most" though certainly not all of those with a similar career track, have a similar mindset.

Or... maybe I'm just a Grumpy ol Marine as well

The grandkids call me "Grumpy," but they when they do it.

the only firearm I've sold in the last 40 or so years was one bought for that purpose .... it was a 16 ga Fox that had a broke stock and forearm .... I gave next to nothing for it, replaced the stock and forearm and sold it for a profit .... if it had of been a 12 or 20 I'd of probably kept it but I have no use whatsoever for a 16 .... I do have several in the safe that I have no special attachment to and which haven't fired a round in decades .... but I also have no desire to part with any of them

Theoretically, yes.

I've sold three or four of them, but I don't do it often. The ones I've sold were either guns I didn't like, or guns I decided I would never shoot.

On the flipside, I only like to "Buy" guns from someone I know.

I never bought a used gun. I am not knocking that when I say it since I was a Newbie Buyer back in the late 90's and on.

I only bought my NIB firearms from a FFL man or FFL men that I personally knew. I did that from the late 90's and on.

I see nothing wrong with honest and legal private sales and sales made through a FFL dealer when it comes to firearms. That goes for any other honest and legal sale when it comes to selling any other object.

I could give many examples in the real news, too long of a list and NOT allowed here, where Legal Sales were made with guns that ended up stolen or were Eventually Used in a bad way in the commission of a crime. Of course, that goes for illegally purchased guns too.

Cars, trucks, knives, hammers, etc. are being used in all kinds of crimes where people are being murdered and severely injured stateside and overseas.

If a bad guy, a bad group - zealots for some cause and GANGS want to do their dirty deed... they will choose ANY item or thing if they want it badly enough.

Evil, nasty, greedy, crazy or sane in their own ideas of right and wrong when it comes to good morals or LACK of them and Criminally Inclined People don't really care when it comes down to it and that includes using their bare hands, a simple rope, a bathtub or a kitchen knife if need be. But we all know that fact of life.

Meanwhile, nothing happened to the former AG Holder and his Fast and Furious gun running gang plan where a good U.S. border patrol agent and a good Mexican policeman were murdered unfortunately. ONE if not more of his F/F guns were used in the murders in Paris, France. They traced that specific gun and IF the F and F plan was never put into action... there would be some people still alive today.

Some Ordinary Criminal or just plain Evil Person could grab my metal cane from me and murder me if they hit me hard enough and in a specific location on my body or head. That is IF they could get it from me to begin with.

Thank you for your service. I have many close friends in LE (Retired and some still working.) and in the Military from my late husband's Nam service time and on.

My late Grandfather on my late Mom's side who died before I was born had a Father who was a New York policeman and he was murdered during a robbery while on duty a zillion years ago.

Most (99%) of my guns and my husband's guns were sold through a FFL dealer and since we did not need the money... we used that money towards something else. We like to use a full in store credit in one specific store. Two other stores and dealers closed up and the men retired. We used them in the past too. We have sold and gifted firearms to people that we know too.

What doesn't get used in this house gets sold or gifted.

If my arthritis and old accident issues were not an issue for me... I would still have kept and used a lot if not ALL of what I used to own and compete with.

I have no problem with selling my guns if they don't get used, or if I just want to buy something different. Sometimes I'll sell to fellow club members, but at other times I have sold to strangers.

In the UK, the firearms licensing laws are such that a person is heavily vetted by the police before they can own a firearm, and each gun they buy must be applied for, so I don't worry about selling to strangers. If the police are happy with the person, then so am I.

Never sold a gun from our collection, but if we did, we'd go thru an FFL or State Police background check (available here in VA). I think I'll just hang on to my guns and let the kids worry about them after I'm gone....

Can't count how many guns I have bought and sold in the 68 years I have owned firearms. I buy a gun have a lot of fun shooting it, then for some reason I get tired of it, sell it and buy something else. Due to my age and some health problems, I am gradually gifting my guns to keep them in the family and working down to the three essential guns. One Shotgun, One Rifle, One Handgun. Won't be buying any more guns. I'm done!

I recommend if you don't know the buyer, use an FFL.

Think you have a good goal/objective in place, ArmyScout. My years are rapidly accumulating also, and the elder eyes tend to make shooting a challenge. I'm actually somewhat close to your "three essentials," and gifting is always a good way to go. A revolver and a derringer bring my gun cabinet total to 5 firearms beyond your suggested three.

Shall see what the days ahead bring.....

It's all in what one is comfortable with, and what types of firearms one prefers. I just kept what I consider the essentials. The positive is that all my guns are with close family members. I'm sure I could "borrow a gun" or two if I wanted. And I kept 2 hand guns instead one. Was difficult giving up those guns. Makes one feel almost un-armed after all the years of having multiple firearms.

agree .... we have 5 hand guns -- 2 handed down from my grandfather -- 2 wife's concealed carry -- 1 Ruger Redhawk 44 mag --

we have 10 rifles -- 1 ea. 30-30, 308, 30-06, 300 WBY -- 1 ea Henry 44 Mag/357/45-70 -- 2 ea 22LR -- 1 ea 50 cal black powder

we have 4 shotguns -- 3 12 ga -- 1 20 ga

some are fired often, some hardly ever fired .... can't envision parting with any of them until its time to pass them down to our sons and I won't know about it when that takes place

If you are worried about selling to someone you don't know well, just insist on only selling to those who have a concealed carry permit, or go through an FFL. If the buyer doesn't want to do one or the other, probably for the best to sell to someone else. Either one should give peace of mind. The other option is to trade it in on something you want. Let the gun shop deal with selling it.

In good ole IL, if you sell a firearm, the process has to go through the State Police and of course both the seller and buyer must have an FOID. But a private gun owner can gift guns to immediate family members who have FOIDs without going through the State Police.
