Re: Best Guitarist
Antônio Carlos Jobim.
Although he did much more than just guitar, his smooth & mellow guitar performances of the bossa nova style, which he created, are world renown.
But also your top 5 OAT might be different, Henry88, if you look at guitarists who played electric vs. acoustic guitars. Jobim primarily used acoustic.

Re: Best Guitarist
My list includes all of those already mentioned, but adds the guitarist/innovator, Les Paul; the rock on which all others roll their country rockin' blues.

Re: Best Guitarist
My dad had a record "Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles", all instrumental guitar Beatle tunes. Awesome. He was remarkable. Another album of him with Doc Watson was great too.

Re: Best Guitarist
Haven't seen a mention of Stevie Ray Vaughan yet so I will toss him in here.
One of his protoge Kenny Wayne Shepherd blew me away with his album Ledbetter Heights when he was 18 years old.

I'd put Angus Young in upper picks. Seen AC/DC in February their show and his energy are Famdamntastic. My all time favorite is Gilmour.

Re: Best Guitarist
I think this is very subjective but here is a list of my favorites:
Ronnie Earl (Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters)
Mary Ford ( I think she was better than Les Paul)
Gary Moore
Alvin Lee
Warren Haynes
Roy Clark did amazing things and made them look easy.
