Just got a new oled tv to replace my 5 year old led tv. Old tv was still fine but after watching the new one at Costco and reading some reviews I couldn't resist. Rting said it was the best mid-range oled for the year. I was afraid I was wasting my money as I know they always look better at the store but I got it hooked up last night and the picture is so much better than my old one. Samsung 65"S90F, $1300 with a 5 year warranty included.

Congratulations. I hadn’t heard about them.

OLED tv's have been around for quite awhile but they've improved a lot recently. They've added some features that have increased their life span and the older models tendency to develop burn-in on the persistent banners like you see on most of the news channels. They've greatly increased their ability to upscale non 4k video to near 4k quality. A lot of other features and the new processor is much more powerful and is also a AI processor so it truly is a smart TV.

Another reason the picture quality is so good is that every pixel has it's own led so the tv has a total of 8.3 million led's.

That's cool. We are still rocking our sharp 75" from 2014. I've had the powersupply and control board go out on me (covid). A local repair guy came out and fixed it. He's a true electronic repair guy. A few years later, he fixed one of my Onkyo receivers. As much as I would love one the crazy vivid tv/s we simply don't watch enough of it to make it worth replacing something that works well.

Back in the year 2001 I thought I had liver cancer because of a sonogram that I was given. My Brother had died of it, so I decided that if I was going to spend a Winter in chemo I was going to have a large screen TV.
I purchased a Visio TV and a Blu Ray Player just for me.
Of course it turned out I didn't have cancer, but Carol let me keep the TV and Blu Ray anyway.
It is now 25 years old and still working just fine.
I have also added a Firestick to it.

Oh, and now it has Star Link for streaming.

Congrats on your new television. I'm not sure what oled does, but it sounds good.

I recently resurrected an older led tv that I just couldn't get a remote to work with. I read about Roku devices and purchased one. It came with a remote and now I can use the TV. (Yup, I saved the TV in the shed. Just couldn't justify throwing it out because the remote broke. TV was still good.)

Our television journey, of course, started with with old tube technology. Then to a rear projection big screen. After that a semi-smart Samsung 42 inch flat screen. Didn't have an internet connection, but had some smart features that were useless without the internet. One day when my youngest and his family were here, they insisted on buying a newer Samsung from Costco (for their use when they visited). I think it was 96 inch? After a few days we took it back. It was way too big for the limited space we had. Came home with a smaller, I think 65 inch or maybe 72. It has wifi, so it has access to the internet. Gets rarely used by us, but our kids and family use it when they visit. They bring their fire stick.

Our living room is paneled with white pine 1x12 vee joint that I ran through the shaper and put an extra groove down the middle so it looks like 1x6. All of the door and window openings match in the sizes on each side etc. I then built a frame and panel cabinet using some birds eye white pine for the tv. When it came time for a new set , I took the tape measure to be sure it fit in. We like the warm look and when not watching the doors are closed so that the big eye isn't disrupting the room.

This thread makes me curious. Just how many TVs do we all own? For my own convenience, I have a small one in my bedroom, a 50" above the fireplace in my living room, and another small one out in my little workshop. When out in my shop, I sometimes like to monitor a sporting event or a Youtube video.

I own a Hisense U8 Series 55" TV which is connected to Xfinity cable/internet and a Windows 11 computer via Wi-Fi. I regularly checkout DVDs from the library and copy them to my hard drive to play via Wi-Fi on the TV. I also watch recorded Xfinity TV, On-Demand network streaming, and You tube content on an 11" Android tablet while I walk on the treadmill. I'm unable to receive any over-the-air TV broadcasts.

What exactly is OLED ? Congrats on your new one! My problem is finding something worth my time to watch. I recently cut the cable TV part of my Comcast deal but kept the internet part. Now I have a lot of free channels but most are just junk. We had only 3 network channels back in the day BUT they were filled with GREAT programing !!

Sounds like a practical set-up.

we have the one.

But my wife has 4 monitors if you include her laptop. I have two monitors.

We have three TVs in the house and two more in the motorhome.
Now shall we talk Computers? I have a desk top and a lap top along with an iPad.
Carol has two desk tops and a lap top as well. (That's for her work.)
We also each have an iPhone.
I also have an old lap top up in the shop.
We have two Star Links and two Firesticks.
We have a Dish Hopper and a Joey in the house and two Wallys in the motorhome.
We also have a Hulu we don't use.

Think that's enough, well I'm also a licensed Ham Radio Operator and have two of them.

We have one TV. It’s a mid sized old Sony (probably 15 years old at least). It’s starting to get some burn spots on it.

For you “experts”, what is the best type (LED vs 4K vs?) if a guy doesn’t want to spend a ton of money? We don’t watch much, but when we do, it would be nice to have good resolution. Some of the high definition ones I’ve seen creep me out. I don’t need to see every pore and pimple on people when watching tv, but I guess it is great when watching nature shows…

A good standard LED tv has a very good picture, just not quite as good as a OLED. Just about any new LED TV will be 4K and do a decent job up-scaling a 1080 video.

You didn't say how big a tv you want. Here's a QLED (https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... ed+vs+oled) that I was considering, 75" on sale at Costco for around $900, they are also available down to a 55". Now's a good time to buy as they want to clear out their 2025 models as the 2026 models are starting to arrive.

Here's the review of that tv, this is a good site to check out any other tv you might consider, you have to have an account to see the fully detailed review but you get a decent amount of info without joining.

I think our current Sony is a 50”. I definitely don’t need anything bigger. Our max distance from the screen is around 10’. I’m definitely not a TV snob. We used our 2005 era 37” Sharp Aquos for over 10 years and then my dad and his wife gave us this Sony as it was just their basement den TV that never got used. I think we’ve had it for about 10 years as well, so given it was with them a few years prior, it’s likely 2012 era. I’m sure even the most basic QLED would be a step up.
