Vintage staple/nail puller

Some time ago BOM wrote about a vintage nail puller he had. At the time I mentioned I had something similar up at the property and I would grab it next time I was up there. I’m really not sure if it’s a nail puller or a staple puller. The jaws look like they would have trouble grabbing a nail seated all the way into a board. However a staple such as a fencing staple should be no problem???

Here are some pics of it and if anybody has any info I’d love to hear it. Doing a quick online search every post I found with this exact tool called it a nail puller.

Nail puller. With this tool you can use a hammer to pull nails that are flush with the board and a regular puller cannot grip.

The jaws go on either side of the nail head. Raise the handle and drive 'er down hard. That drives the jaws below the head of the nail. Then you can pull 'em out.

Great, thanks for the info. Think I’ll drive a nail somewhere and give this process a try. Makes perfect sense, kinda like a reverse slam hammer.
