Well it has been almost a week since my wife has been in her new home at the Memory Care facility and she is still trying to get used to her new surroundings. She has been getting involved in some activities and the care and food is great! Now my continuing struggle is with the Fed. Long Term Care claim which they seem to want to drag it out for approval....why can't such things like this be simple as they have all the info.
Here at home I am a bit more relaxed but it is of course too quiet at times and when I look over at her favorite spot in the den she is not there.
Me and Buster holding it together here and now going to visit Margie again for lunch!
Hope all you folks doing well here as I try to catch up and THANKs for your great wishes!

It's really hard Forty. I had to put my Mother in a Nursing Home after a stroke and my Mother in Law
suffered from memory loss and also went to a home. Just be advised that it is best in the long run.
My Brother in Law tried to keep their Mother at his house and finally called one night crying because
she kept wandering out of the house at night. He couldn't get any sleep.
It is tough.

Thanks! When I got there Margie was playing Bingo with a small group so I joined in and we together won 2 games and a prize! The best prize is the home style cooked food that place serves as lunch was like a Sunday meal at Mom and Dad's house!!!!! I fill out her menu for the week and alternate the types of foods for balance. She is in great hands so far!

Double key deadbolts on the exterior doors. A friend's wife was in the late stages of Dementia, and he wanted to keep her at home on the rural property. I suggested the same thing. He kept the doors locked 24/7. They had both a very high deck overlooking the back pasture, and a large pond near the house. No key, no exit. Kept her safe and secure until the very end.

As I get older I find I am forgetting things as well. Nothing serious yet, but it has me a bit concerned. We got home yesterday and I had to think long and hard about where I had put things six weeks ago before we left. I finally go it all figured out and everything is back to normal, but it is something to think about.
I got all the vehicles out of the pole barn and got the motorhome in out of the coming storm. I also have the snow plow positioned behind it right at the door ready to go if needed. They are saying we will get mostly rain and ice though.
My Kubota started right up and I back bladed the drive and yard.
Back to normal.

One thing to consider. There have been several studies that link use of Diphenhydramine AKA Benedryl, and a greatly increased chance of dementia. I used to use it regularly for seasonal allergies. I also noticed having occasional trouble with words and locking up when speaking for the last 5 to 7 years. After I quit using Diphenhydramine, I noticed a marked improvement. It may be the placebo effect, and I'm not sure I had an issue that was anything to really worry about, but, better safe than sorry. I now feel much better about my mental state, although Zyrtec doesn't work nearly as well for my allergies.
I helped take care of my MIL for several years, and the thought of going down that road myself gives me great pause to consider.
Fortyshooter, I wish you the best dealing with this. It's tough.

I used Diphenhydramine nightly as a doctor recommended sleep aid before (and even after) I was diagnosed and treated for severe sleep apnea. It worked quite well for decades; I slept like a baby, but I decided to back off about a couple of years ago after reading reports about studies such as those you mentioned. I can't say I've noticed any difference in my mental acuity (how would I? we all forget stuff). Nonetheless, it is a really great sleep aid.
