Side Benefit of Two Bathroom Projects...

Post by BrokenolMarine » Tue Feb 17, 2026 11:29 pm

Miss T had two bathroom projects on her to do list for a couple years, and has finally gotten them started on the guest bath, the master bath is next. It's a husband and wife team, friends of ours. He is our guy for a lot of things, but the wife is a Tile Artist, in demand all over the state. I found a side benefit of Miss Tina's bathroom project.

Some of you may remember that one of MY hobbies is dabbling in making knives, and I sometimes inlaid a bit of Turquoise in them. Real Turquoise direct from a mine in AZ. I would buy palm size cutoff slabs 1/4" thick from what they call Floor slabs. Unfortunately the mine is closed or closing and they no longer have Floor slabs. Miss T found some chunks on Ebay that I planned to cut on my Wet Tile Saw. Didn't work out. Mine is a 4-1/2" wet saw, basically about a 2" cut.

I ended up with a few pieces still left from the AZ mine, and these chunks I needed to find someone to cut.

Tina looked online and found some bigger wet saws used in the $500 range. Miss Lisa brought HER pro tile saw over today to start cutting the bathroom tile and marble for the walls. The Dewalt saw sells for $1,400. It would do the job. She told me to go ahead and cut what I needed while she was working on the layouts.

Taking my time and letting the saw do the work, I cut the chunks into slab pieces I can work with in the future. I'll be able to cut them on the smaller wet saw I have to make spacers, accent pieces, or scales for the knives down the road. Stroke of luck.

Patience is a virtue.

The bathroom is coming along. When she finishes the guest bath, the master bath is ahead....

Tina started her planning a long time back, ideas here and there. BIG ideas. Then she really started looking at things about a year ago, tossing things around, crunching numbers, tossing out some things but keeping others, but keeping one motto in mind, buy quality once.

About the time you started your project, we got on our guys schedule for three months (ish) out. Tina started seriously looking to buy the needed supplies, with the contractor's participation. This one okay? Pay a bit more for that one? Since the wife of the team was the Tile Guru, she tagged along when T went to buy the Tile for the floors and walls. Don't cheap out, but nothing wrong with buying quality on sale. Some things had to be ordered, which is where starting early paid off.

When they were ready to start, 95% of the materials were on site and waiting. Seven work days in, and one of the two bathrooms, almost done. I might post pics on the process if anyone is interested.

Yes, please post pics. I’ve enjoyed watching the progress of Coach’s project. And, awesome that she let you use her tile saw for your needs. Right place, right time.

After checking with her this morning, I made two more cuts. We had gone by a Granite Supply Place a couple years ago that we passed often, to see if they would sell us a couple pieces from their off cut pile. The lady told us that she would give us several pieces from the pile when she found I just wanted to use them for tooling bases for my leather work. One was a 2x3' square, the other two were off shaped smaller pieces I stuck in the corner of the shop to wait until I could reshape them.

I squared them up this morning.
