I’m doing a drawing to submit to our agricultural fair next week, I’ve got to add a Ferro rod and steel fire starter. Then the background will be a topographical map. I’ve got to clean this up before adding the topo. It’s going to be called “ Tools of the Trade” representing Registered Maine Guides. It’s all colored pencils. Hope to finish by Tuesday. It has to be framed and delivered by Thursday. I’ll make it no problem.

Been wanting to do this for a long time. I’ll brighten up the colors and it should look good.

I just thought I’d share one of my other hobbies.

Looks great, must be nice to have talent with art. I recognize that Kershaw knife, carried one for years while I was still working.

I like it. I think colored pencils are under rated. I tried an adult coloring book once with some. Very relaxing.

What does one have to do to become Registered Maine Guide?

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife do the testing. It’s the toughest guides exam in the USA. You send in an application stating which classification you’re seeking. The classifications are Hunting, Fishing, Recreational, Sea Kayaking and Whitewater Guide. You can apply, get fingerprinted. If you your fingerprints clear you’ll get a date to be tested. You’ll take a written exam with 100 questions which you need a 70 or better to pass. You’ll also take an oral test with two examiners. This is actually four parts. You’ll do a map and compass test where you’ll be given a starting point and ending point. You’ll use you Gazetteer the paper we give you states we want the true north bearing, magnetic north bearing, magnetic back bearing, the distance in miles. You’re allowed plus or minus 3 degrees and plus or minus 2 tenths of a mile. Your GPS you bring in what ever you use. Most use cell phone with an app. Garmen Explore, onX Hunt, Gaia or one of others available. You’ll tell use what you read for later and long, then w e give you another decimal degree location. You tell us where it brings you,the magnetic bearing and distance in miles. If you’ve got the the info properly entered you’ll be almost spot on. After these are completed we do an oral exam. These will be questions about what you want to do with your license, what you’ll want to ask clients, questions about cancellations, refunds etc. We’re not telling them what they need to do just to consider these things. There will be about 20-25 questions from each examiner. Laws pertaining to the class you seek. Safety questions, All tests will include boating questions, PFDs, Buoys headway speed etc. We’re have a large tv screen where you see photos of mammals, plants, trees, birds, fish and anything that you might see like snakes, turtles etc. You will see about 30-35 slides. If it appears you know the first 4-5 each category we move on. You will also get what’s called an event. This could be a lost hunter, capsized canoe, individual breaking a law, someone burn, cut or even shot. We want details how you would answer the situation. After you’ve completed this exam you’re asked to step into the other room and the examiners will discuss you exam and agree if you passed all of it or if you need to come back and take a portion over again. The written, oral event map an. Compass and gps takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The percentage that pass first time is in the 70s percentile. I would say about 10-15 percent have to come back to retest on area. Usually is map and compass, or GPS or event. About 95 percent pass rafter retest. I’ve only seen a few come back three times. I think the hardest part is that when you test for hunting for example you’re going to be questioned about trapping as well, big and small game. Some will say I’m only going to guide moose hunting but their license says the can guide hunting for all’s pieces as well as trap bear for a hunter to shot. I just thought I’d share the results of judging the art work. I didn’t take the photo someone else did and sent to us.

I’m happy with it! That was probably 10-12 hours work. I’ve got a place to hang it right over my fly tying desk.
