I spent nearly fourteen years in Marine Aviation, but helos. Our carriers were smaller. No cats.

My little brother spent most of his 20 years on the deck crews of carriers. He loved it.

I never felt smaller, than standing on a carrier deck in the middle of the ocean at night after flight ops. The ocean and the sky seemed huge and the boat so small.

I loved the quiet after the chaos of the ops.

My alone time was sitting in a machine gun tower outside the wire in Vietnam. When I first got to MACV we didn't have any security troops so we had to provide our own security. They would take you out to the tower at dusk and leave you alone in a tower heavily sand bagged with a case of grenades, an M60 Machine Gun, and your personal weapon, which was an M14. Lonely. They would come relieve you at dawn.

My job that I loved was Air Traffic Control both as a journeyman controller and then 17 years as a supervisor. I absolutely loved it. In all I spent 32 years with the FAA.

The retirement is good too.
