Right where my wife and I fish this last weekend there was a big landslide that caused a big wave. The water crossed the lake right into the mouth of a river and water and debris traveled all the way up to the highway that parallels the shoreline. Here’s a still showing the slide area across the lake and the wave. The mouth of the river (Colville River) is right where we catch fish. In the link to KHQ local news is a video that shows the waves.

glad you weren't on the lake when the wave came through .... the debris moved into your fishing area may provide more habitat for the fish population

I've read about glaciers calving and causing large waves like that. Somewhere in my memory is a TV show that talked about a similar landslide causing a very large wave like that. They showed the barren slope going down to the water, and the opposite side of that bay where the wave hit, I think it was in Alaska.
Hope nobody was hurt and any property damage was minimal.

Yes, that was in Alaska and I too have seen that film and it sure made a mess. It doesn’t look like there was any damage to private property. Interesting that since this lake is a Federal property no private property owners can have a dock nor do they own the beach. The full pool elevation of the lake is 1290 feet above sea level and the Government owns up to the 1310 foot line. This time of the year the lake is drawn down so the level was on the low end. I might take a drive up there in a few days and take a look.

That is very interesting. I've known about that one in Alaska, too. No way to predict such thing, either. Spooky.

There's a possibility of a landslide from one of the Canary Islands that could cause a 100 foot tall tsunami hitting the US east coast. US west coast could also have a massive tsunami from a landslide from Hawaii which they say will happen sometime in the future.

Most of these mega-disasters are predicted to happen again in geologic time. They say the Yellowstone mega-volcano is past due to erupt again. It could erupt tomorrow or thousands of years from now. If we're around it will probably be the end for us. Even the sun will become a Red Giant eventually but the odds are we won't be around for that.

Did you end up coming up this way? I’m driving my wife down to Spokane to fly to Seattle next week, so will look for where the slide was. Not sure if it’s visible from the 395?

Never made it up there. You won’t be able to see it from 395, it’s probably 3-4 miles south on Hwy 25 towards Davenport. Safe travels on the road and in the air. Nice to not live in upstate New York isn’t it!

Yes, I’m enjoying my green grass at the moment! I’ve been doing a lot of whitetail hunting up high, so have been in the snow a lot over the past few weeks, but I’m very happy to not have it in the yard!
