Wish me luck

Post by daytime dave » Fri Nov 01, 2024 12:59 pm

Today is Mary's last work day. She retires at the end of the day. She has worked hard and done very well. She has never left her company, but it has always left her, so to speak. Her company kept getting bought by another company. She always stayed. This last company has recognized all her year's of service the same as if she had always worked for them. I thought that was something. She works out of a home office and traveled a lot.
She always had a company car. We just got back from picking up her brand new SUV she picked out last week. She recently got her own computer, has her own phone and has some plans to meet co-workers for lunches next week. After that ...........................

We'll see if the honey do list grows. I still work part time, having retired twice. I'll work another couple of years before I'm all done.

I have a special meal planned and a nice retirement gift waiting for tonight. (Not a gold watch, but plenty of gold) I'm sure she will stay busy.

I retired along time ago but Carol still practices law. We don't need the money but she likes what she's doing and I doubt she will ever quit on her
own.
Retiring is hard. No, not kidding. You suddenly become no one again after years of saying "I am my (job or career)", and it kind of leaves you lost for a while.
I had a bit of a problem becoming just another citizen myself.
Give her lots of room and try to keep her busy for a while. If she has a hobby that will help.
It takes time.
Carol says it took me over a year to settle down.

Well, it's official now. We transferred things from the company car to the new car. I brought drinks and the gift to her office just after 5 PM. Dinner is just about done and she liked the diamond and ruby pendant in gold. (I like to see things without cheaters, so it was expensive) Let's hope it goes well. I've been fortunate and been able to retire twice.
I recommend retirement to everyone. 8-) :D

My only advice to HER is to learn to so NO firmly, and mean it. When you retire, you are suddenly everyone's favorite person to call on, since you have nothing to do. Family, friends, volunteer organizations, the church groups...

You are suddenly perfect for this or that.
I'm sure others here will back me up.
Choose to say yes.
Learn to say NO.

Enjoy retirement.

Congrats to Mary on a job well done. Adjusting to life not devoted to a corporate mission can be challenging. For me it was easy for my wife it was tough. She loved her job and was very good at it. Adjusting to not being focused on the mission took time for her.
