Hoping any members here in East Tenn./ West NC....

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Sep 29, 2024 10:30 am

Are doing best they can with all the flooding disaster there. Main Interstates and roads are washed out and will be a good while before it is cleared up.
First time I have seen so much interstate highway destruction at one time!

Saw on the news the horrible destruction in Asheville NC. I bought a car from a guy in Asheville and traveled there to see it so that town gets my attention when on the news. The guy I bought the car from passed away earlier this year so he missed the destruction but he has family there who for sure experienced the tragedy. Best to all.

Mark lives in Hendersonville, I'm pretty sure they are still without power.
I texted and check on him and he responded Fri. evening.

I didn't even think about Mark. Hope he has a Generator and is doing OK.

Also glad to see he has some type of communication. We got next to nothing in comparison, but for a while we had No Power, No Landline Service (computer as well) and No Cell Phone Service. I have 2 Generators, but that wouldn't do any good for incoming or outgoing contacts.

Keep us posted on it.

My son and daughter in law are in Moore, SC and without power since the storm hit. The latest projection is Friday for restoration.

My wife went to western NC on Wednesday of last week to attend a meeting of the small homeowners association of which she is the President. She left home in South Carolina on Wednesday in anticipation of heavy rain as she wanted to get to her house before driving got difficult. She did in fact make it to the house on Wednesday afternoon but she had a rough time of it Thursday evening and Friday morning and since.

I wasn't able to speak to her for several days until a neighbor connected her mobile phone to starlink. I was unable to get to her so I was quite worried but when I spoke to her, she said she is OK but there are numerous trees down but somehow, not one fell on the few houses in the development. Luckily, the Generac generator functioned as it should and most importantly to her, she had plenty of coffee. No power, no land line, no cell service but she had coffee so all is well. She said she lost one tree but it fell away from the house.

No prediction has been given on power restoration or land line service, but she will try to return to South Carolina this afternoon.

As far as the South Carolina house, one huge red oak fell but it fell away from the house. No power for a day and a half but I am so fortunate compared to others in the area who still have no power and have significant damage.

God has been good to us. I pray for speedy recovery for others in the Southeast affected by this evil storm.

Three years ago we stopped in Ashville for a while with our RV. It's a really nice area.

I was in the area just west of Boone Sunday. To get to the cabin, I had to find routes around two washed out bridges; drove around mudslides; under and around fallen trees; on roads with 1-1/2 lanes washed out (unsure how bad the undercut was where the pavement remained); over fallen power lines and under power lines propped up on sticks to provide clearance. Saw a lot of damage and devastation.

I will not be surprised if many areas don’t have power for 2+ weeks.

I was fortunate-my cabin did not get hit by any trees-the large trees that came down fell away from the cabin. The worst I had was the storm tossed my Weber gas grill off the deck and my refrigerator/freezer thawed so I had to toss a little food.

That’s quite the journey you had. Reminds me a bit of the Mad Max movies. Happy your damage is limited.

Apple iphone 14s and up with IOS18 have a satellite connection feature. Maybe we will hear from some of those affected by the hurricane using that feature.

Texted with Mark, again this afternoon and they are still out of power, but they did get potable water back today.
He's told to expect power to be restored around noon.
They've gotten word that their cottage is still standing, but there are no passable roads up there.
Says lots of mud in the streets and businesses are trying to clean up, says some will most likely never reopen.

God bless the giving folks that are using their helicopters to bring aid! From what I heard tonight you own your own safety!

A retired Nascar driver with 2 helicopters giving back. He found people flashing him with a mirror for help and said it was a difficult place to get in to. I’ve never experienced what these people are going through. Its hard to imagine what I would do if I had to. God Bless and prayers for all those who are in this.

I just downloaded iOS18 yesterday and haven’t tried it yet, but my buddy had his out when we were hunting two nights ago about 10 miles in from the end of normal service. He was texting his wife. It showed when the next satellite would be overhead to send his reply (2 minute wait).

My neighbors brother lives in Asheville and he just heard from him today. They are ok, but their daughter who is an hour away was told they won’t have water for a month or more! Hope all our members are ok!

So it works with the IOS 18 update then I assume??? I havent downloaded that yet I have only done the 17.7 update. I was waiting for any bugs to be ironed out.

Yes, it works from the 18.1 update. I tried it the other day, and it works flawlessly. Very nice addition to the safety arsenal as I hunt solo at least 3 days a week right now. My currant spot is 10 miles from cell service, so having an option other than my InReach is great.
