Aus just defeated USA 18-0 in the rugby 7's quarter final to progress to final 4.
Our womens soccer lost their opening match 3-0 to Germany, not a real surprise as they have to be the most over hyped nation team we have.

Have to make the most of the rugby win as I think the only other sport we have even a slight chance of getting near the USA medal tally is swimming. We finished 2nd to China at the 23 world champs on gold medal count but 3rd on overall medals behind both China and USA.

I've been kinda semi following some of the shooting qualifications, and what leads up to the people that actually get to shoot in the Olympics. I like our people and I think we have strong contenders in every event, but watch out for India, they're an upcoming power for a lot of events.

Going back a decade or two, I can remember that there were a few cable channels that carried the less popular events, which was great. Everything now is pay-per-view if it is available at all. Some shooting will be on YouTube a month or so later, but I miss being able to watch some of the "never heard of" events as they happened.

I was looking at some sites about the 10 meter air rifle and pistol competition, incredible accuracy required. The bullseye on the rifle target is .5mm.

If this is inappropriate, I hope one of the moderators will delete it in a timely fashion, but in any event, think about supporting USA Shooting.

They are an organization which supports shooting sports, notably USA shooting teams in Olympics and similar events. I believe donations are tax deductible.

I give a bit occasionally and have given twice recently to buy a meal or two for the teams competing in Paris.

Have not shot much competition pistol the past 10 years so dont personally know any of our Australian shooters this Olympics, our best chance of medals will be in the shotgun events.
Hopefully there is some coverage like the past few olympics using super slow motion cameras. It was fascinating being able to see shot in flight and watch clays flying into the middle of shot strings.
Real shame they dropped events from the shooting program last olympics and we lost 50m rifle and pistol events. 50m pistol had been shot since the first games in 1896. Very boring to watch but for pure accuracy and skill with a pistol nothing else came close.

I watched videos of some of the previous year's shooting events. The skill displayed is impressive. I had shot PPC at the regional and state level, and gotten used to dealing with THAT pressure. Never had the desire to move up to Nationals.

There is so much more involved at the elite levels. ;)

Not inappropriate at all. There's nothing wrong with cheering for/supporting a particular country during Olympic competition especially if it's your own.

Was trying to watch the opening ceremonies but it is the most bizarre Olympic opening ceremony I have ever watched. Turned it off, crazy.

Yes, it was very odd for sure.

They pushed the gay agenda throughout.

They mocked the last supper with drag queens if you didn’t see it…

I thought the boat entrances were unique.

Now let’s just get on with the games.

Nothing has been deleted by admin or mods today. Must have been eaten by a gremlin. If you can remember what you posted try again.

Gold for Aus in the womens relay silver for the USA, reversed in the mens relay with USA claiming gold and Aus silver.
End of the medals for day one has Australia on top of the medal table with 3 gold ahead of China with 2 and the USA with 1.
As an Aussie I will make the most of it, not often we get to top the medal table, a few medal chances tomorrow in the swimming and canoeing but our time on top of the table wont last long.
