Mare's Leg 45-70 wheels turning in my head again.....

Well for a legal USA version with a 16.5 inch barrel and OAL of 26 inch it would be very easy to do! Take one Rossi Trapper and a little wood working later :D Plus it is threaded for suppressor too. :D :D No SBR permit required! Well barrel just 4.5 inch longer than it needs to be but still very handy to carry. My mild 45-70 loads would work very well with recoil control. About like shooting my 20 ga. Shockwave.

Doesn’t a rifle need a buttstock?

Looked at the regulations and if the barrel is 16 inch or longer AND the OAL length is 26 inch or more it is legal. Using my pistol grip type stock Henry lever rifle with 17.5 inch barrel as a guide the cut at rear edge of the grip droop would be slightly over 26 inch for OAL length figuring in a 16.5 inch barrel. No mention of what stock has to look like. Rossi made the Ranch Hand as pistols due to the short 12 inch barrel length and short OAL length. Now Rossi could easily make a 45-70 Mares Leg if they wanted too! They don't like a rifle with a less than 16 inch barrel that is designed to be fired from shoulder.

As a shooter who has shot 45-70 in light carbines and still does, a big no thank-you. Trap door loads are all I can handle in those and they're still plenty.

Haven't pulled the trigger yet but that picture keeps saying "do it....do it cause you can't do it later on the bottom side of the grass" !
Standing there with my cartridge belt on with all those 45-70 rounds anchoring me down it should be fine

I could handle my BFR 45-70 revolver okay.

I’m all for it! As long as it’s not a collector’s piece, and I don’t think any Rossi qualifies as that, do what you want. You can always nail it back together later. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

It will be much easier to tote around in the short scabbard especially on my utility tractor. Hey I have bears roaming around the place this time of year! :D

Picked up the Rossi R 95 45-70 Trapper today. In stock barrel length the mag tube holds 5 rounds. Cut the barrel to 13 inch from it's 16.5 and you have 4 in the tube. The carbine cycles my 45-70 405 gr. rounds smoothly and will do a range test this weekend. Looking at the stock if I cut it in a spot to make it look good I would have a 27 inch OAL with factory 16.5 barrel length which is legal. Now is it worth the $200 buck stamp and paperwork to cut to proper Mule's Leg length of 13 inch???? Of course it is! Oh and my custom made ghost ring rear sight I have on my Marlin 1895 slides right in place!

Well have the stock cut leaving some material for final shaping and sanding. OAL will be 27 to 27.5 inch which is over the legal must be 26 inch.
It feels good in hand and isn't heavy feeling like I thought. If I like how it shoots barrel will be cut to 13 inch and shorten the mag tube by the length of 45-70 round for 4 in the mag and one in chamber if you want 5. Of course the ATF paperwork will be filed before any barrel shortening.

Name either Ranch Hoss or Mule's Leg 45-70

Having FUN with this!
