After living here for 20 months I finally made it to the top of the wood tower on Timms Hill. Looking through the metal tower which you can’t climb. That is my home in the distance. The green farmland to the right and hill with the trees to the left is mine. There is also another lower hill that kind of blends into mine. I don’t own that. Yours truly,

My hat is a Stormy Kromer. I climbed it again today. Round trip it’s just under three miles with only 160 feet elevation gain. Half of that is going down my driveway and then coming back up it. But also the trail is up and down a little.

Looks like you missed a spot when you were shaving.

So, a guy who has climbed Mt Rainier here in Washington State is now at the peak of Wisconsin at 1900 ft. That’s an interesting perspective.

I’ve been at the top of four states, Washington, Oregon, Texas and now Wisconsin.

Beautiful homestead you have Gene! I could see myself camping out there in that field on a star lit night with camp fire going with a nice cup of coffee and an old Winchester 1892!

Living here is like camping out. There are no lived in houses within eyesight and the road only gets a dozen cars a day.

I also enjoy solitude. Maybe it's a Vietnam Vet thing.
We live just half a mile off a very busy county highway, (Mn23), but that half mile is all dense forest made
up of Red Oak, White Oak, Hickory, Maple, Aspen, Elm and Walnut. Even with the leaves off in the Winter we
cannot see the highway and usually can't hear it. In the Winter we can see our neighbors to both sides of
us, but not when the leaves are on the trees.
We have frontage on a small unimproved lake which the state labels, (Primitive). We have a dock and a
14 ft row boat and an 18 ft canoe. There are never any other boats on the water, most of the time. One neighbor
has an old pontoon they go for rides in when the weather is nice.
The Game Warden tells me that our lake is the best duck and goose hunting lake in the county, in fact he
spends a lot of time here in the season. Hunters carry small boats in from a old road on the south end.
When I first moved here I was a single man raising two teenage boys. The boys in the coffee shop asked if
I'd ever get married again and I told them I had my dog and my gun and that's all I needed. Then this woman
came along 30 years ago that I couldn't pass up, so I got married. The boys in the coffee shop asked why since
I had my dog and gun and I had said that was all I needed. My reply was, "the dog died".

Carol hates that story, but it's true. I said it.

Here's a picture I took in the Winter of 1990 before I met Carol or about the same time.

Gene. I'm a couple hours drive to the east of you but used to spend a lot of time in that area. Before retirement I hauled concrete bridge beams and we did a bunch of bridge jobs in that part of the state. A lot in the Tomahawk area but also up and down HWY 51 and all over the rest of the state and the U.P. So the next time you go under an overpass look up and see a some of my handiwork.

I go through Tomahawk and drive WI51 a couple times a week going to Wausau.

Very cool! I notice the trees around the house, are wildfires a worry there like in WA? My friend lost his rural property this summer, it was very similar to yours. Have you taken any wildfire precautions? I am guessing that emergency response times are pretty long there.

Immediately after that and the Medical Lake fire that tore through several hundred homes, I bought one of these kits. It will remain up top 8 months per year.

I am assuming you are addressing me, right? I worry about fire a lot. This has been an extremely dry
year and we had a total ban on open burning. Thankfully we finally got a lot of rain.
Fire response is 13 miles away but it's open road so the time would probably be between 20 to 30
minutes. We have a swimming pool and that counts as a water reservoir for a fire engine. 20,000
gallons of clean water if needed.
I'll look into that sprinkler system.

I climbed the tower again today. I might start climbing it daily. It’s about a three mile loop from my house and I don’t have to drive anywhere. I pass this spot on Bass Lake along the way.

There is really a nice picnic park 300 yards from the towers.

That three mile loop daily will keep you young Gene. Great views on a nice day.

Lived in Wausau for a short time and did camp at Rib Mountain State Park . Climbed the tower and paid the dime to look through the telescope. Is there still a lot of Ginseng grown around there?
