Armed ride share app: Atlanta

Post by GunnyGene » Tue May 23, 2023 10:20 am

Info for travelers to Atlanta: This is the first of it's kind, afaik. But may become popular in other locations. BlackWolf provides armed drivers, if you can afford it.

Interesting but one would have to be awfully paranoid to use the service. Also, what's to prevent someone from disarming the driver for his/her firearm? Just thinking aloud.

Good question. Judging from what the owner said in the article it's probably less likely than a cop being disarmed in his/her squad car. I have a personal story from several years ago about local small town police in this regard if you're interested.

OK. Back in Aug of '18 I had to pick up my BBSC at the other location of the gunshop I normally do business with. About 30 miles away. So back out to the lot and fire up my pickup and head down the road. I wasn't familiar with the other town so wasn't real sure where the shop was. As I entered the outskirts of West Point (no connection with the Army), I spotted a local police cruiser sitting on the property of a small gas station, so I figured to stop and ask the officer for directions. As it happens the cruiser was positioned just right for me to pull up alongside so I did. My driver side next to the squad car driver side and about 8 inches space between us. As I roll down my window I notice the officer ( a nice looking young lady) appeared to be asleep. So I wait a minute or so and finally stick my arm out and tap on her window. She woke up, and looked a little disoriented and surprised at seeing the smiling face of a bearded old guy wearing a USMC ballcap, who has the high ground. Anyway, no guns were drawn, and I introduced myself and inquired about the gunshop location. She gave me directions and then we chatted for a few minutes about the Marine Corp and that some of the force were former active duty Marines. I thanked her for the directions and suggested that she might be a little more careful about sleeping on duty, that I could have been some hoodrat with a grudge against the police. I told her I wouldn't rat her out, and she looked very relieved. Went on my way, got the rifle, and then home.

So all that is why I think the BlackWolf ride share employee's are less likely to be disarmed ( or shot) than a cop. :) But I do realize this is purely anecdotal, and (hopefully) not representative of other LEO. But I've also known guys in war zones who have dozed off on guard duty. It happens more often than people think.

Good on you I hope that she paid attention to your wake up call. Someone could have wasted her and most likely made a clean getaway.

I'm sure she realized that judging from the look on her face. ;) Here's a (Google) street level view of the location. Stop light intersection. North is up, I was coming from the East, and her car was parked next to the small island pointing South. Would have been an easy getaway for a bad guy.

I've also never heard it, maybe it's a regional slang word.

Could be, I suppose. But you're welcome to include it in your vocabulary. :D

Here's the definition from the Urban Dictionary:

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Hoodrat
a) person who lives and exhibits attitudes of inner city life. usually a negative connotation that implies poor upbringing, bad manners, little to no education and low class behavior

If I were a criminal and had two brain cells to rub together, I wouldn't think about trying to steal a gun from a well trained, experienced and armed driver.

Unfortunately, there are lots of criminals with less than two.

I had a guy fall asleep while on a recon mission. 4 hrs of unguarded sleep. I got my butt chew out by the Lt. when we got back. The CP woke him up when we missed 3 sitreps. in a row. So while we were sleeping he was not. PO but relieved. Needless to say, the sleeping dude was gone in days after we got back. No room in recon for guys you can't trust. Just the way it is.
