I'm not a morning person

Up at 4:00 AM to go with the Pup to boneyard beach for the first time in a year. I worked most of my life on the evening shift, getting home in the wee hours. I have a somewhat earlier go to bed/get up time, but 4:00 doesn't normally fit into that. Hopefully we'll get some good pictures.

Now that I’m retired I’m a morning person and getting up with the sun is common for me. In the summer I routinely get up at 4 am to watch the sunrise. Especially here in Wisconsin where I have a clear view. Then it’s common for me to take a 7-9 am nap.

I've always been an "early to bed, early to rise person". I have never taken naps in my life until recently. I guess it's the age catching up to me. Lately I've been taking a thirty-to-sixty-minute nap in the afternoon around three.

I spent 10 years working swing shift by choice until the company I worked for eliminated swing due to cutbacks. Transitioned to 6:00 am start and that was a shock.

Worked that shift for the next 12 years and after getting up at 3:30 am daily I’m now a morning person. As a retired guy I sleep in until around 5-6 am but am usually asleep by 9pm. Old phart here.

Well, we got back a few hours ago. It was pretty much a bust. They were opening at 6:00, now it's a half hour before sunrise. Problem is, it takes a good half hour or more to drive, and walk to the beach and the really prime time is just before the sun comes over the horizon. We could have lived with that, but the gnats were horrible. Neither of us could concentrate on what we were doing. The only salvageable shot I got had to be be severely spotted due to what I believe was gnats in front of the lens. Things have rearranged there and most views are too busy.
The Pup got nothing to speak of. I may have a couple others that can be rescued, but basically it was a wash.

I worked some swing but the last 30 years it was get up at 5AM to get to work at 6, even then I rarely got to bed before midnight. Now I go to bed even later and only set an alarm if I have to. Usually get up some time between 9:30 and 11. I do get up a little earlier during the hottest part of Summer to get outside chores done before it gets too hot.
I like the photo you posted so at least the trip wasn't a total waste of time.

This is a single image from the 5 that were merged to make the one I posted. I find that the single photos of this genre are often easier to edit properly than the HDR merged image. The downside is you lose detail and punch in some areas. Still, I think this is a better image overall. I may try editing the HDR from scratch after learning from the single. I would like to edit out the root mass on the far left, but my Photoshop skills aren't quite up to that.

I think it is a great picture. You do good work! It's too bad your day was basically wasted.

4am is the normal get up time for me. Burning daylight.

Well, there was another that wasn't too bad. It is the same set of trees (This is the tree and angle I always end up with here), and I was able to get closer to the main tree, use a shorter focal length and bypass that distracting root ball on the left. The downside was losing the "grass" in the lower right corner of the above pictures. Anyway, I do like the nice soft look of the waves. I was able to enhance that a little in post process. These pictures are a real challenge to process. You can't get a balanced exposure with the relatively bright sky and the backlit trees and foreground.

I have always liked night shifts, even in the Corps. If I have to get up early to be somewhere at a certain time, I don't sleep well. I wake up every 20 to 30 minutes to check the clock and see if I overslept. Always fear missing the alarm. Eventually I give up, get up way too early, have a nice breakfast and arrive WAY too early and am tired way early in the evening.
Working evenings or midnight shifts, I can sleep during the day, wake up slowly in the afternoon or evening and have a meal, then relax a tad then off to work. Now that I am retired and RARELY have to be anywhere, I still don't wake up early. I usually get up at around 730 or 800 because Tina is up early to milk. I go to bed around midnight or so most nights, but if I can't sleep due to arthur... I may be up until 1 or 2am... then I'm still up at 8am.
Habit.

Pretty picture! Nats are not my friends. I despise them and any other annoying bug.
