The best think that happen to me was to start carrying a cane . The cane is a 100% instant defense and it your hand all the time . . It lets you defend yourself now or to where you can change to a better weapon if needed . The video below said it better me . .

We are not allowed CCW in the UK. We are not even allowed handguns any more - certainly not for self defence, anyway - so I am with you, TG. I always carry my 'cane' - albeit an aluminum one. It's always loaded, and the safety is "off".

I use a cane frequently because I have to aid in my balance. When I go in some places that weapons are not allowed (Simple misdemeanor to violate in Iowa.) I frequently have the cane that has a sword built in it. I'm not a sword fighter, but it makes me feel more comfortable.

I use a cane also, but I have an excuse to carry one as I have an artificial leg. I normally do not need it to walk, but it is a dandy self defense weapon. I have taken Escrima lessons at my local Martial Arts studio so I do have a little expertise on how to use it and you can do a good amount of damage with one if you know how to use it. Being how old I am nobody gives it a second thought when it carry it.

Next time I see an old man with a cane at Publix I'll be sure to show due respect :D

Carrying a sword or dagger cane is illegal in a lot of states, counties and cities even with a CCW . If it is a double edge sword or knife that is whole another charge it is concealed or open view . The Bowie knife below was illegal to carry hunting or my Cowboy action matches or Black powder matches in 3 states I lived in , so it stays in a my house . The paste below give a state by state knife laws .

This is true and that type of cane and some types of knives can be illegal in many states even if you have a CCW permit.

Check your current .gov websites so that you do not get into any problems.

Blade Forums may not even be up to date on local laws. The .gov websites should be up to date with their local and state laws when it comes to these issues.

Take care.

I use and carry a cane on and off depending on my day. I have good and bad days due to my arthritis and due to that bad flare starting up last spring from an old accident injury. Horrific fall years ago.

I do carry one if I know that I am going to be out longer or when I travel so it is there if I need it.

I only have one cane at this point and it is the one that I had to get when I was in such pain standing, sitting, walking and lying down when my neck was totally out last spring. This made my entire body out of whack so to speak.

Any object including a basic cane could be used as a self defense tool if needed. Plus even if you don't need a cane for such a thing - it does help you with your balance and walking if your body has any type of issue on and off or 24/7.
