Full sturgeon moon on Thurs.

Post by clovishound » Tue Aug 09, 2022 1:35 pm

This is one of several super moons this year. It will be at it's closest point to Earth this year on 11 Aug. I don't think it really makes it appear noticeably bigger, although they are 17% larger and 30% brighter than at the furthest distance from Earth.

I'll try and get a few pictures, but it's supposed to be cloudy/rainy Thurs night here.

Got a little practice in for it a couple days ago.

You would think with a 500mm lens, you would be able to get a pretty decent closeup picture of something as big as the moon in the sky.

This is the full frame:

One would think so. On the opposite side of the spectrum hubble takes great photos of things light years away but all the photos of Bigfoot and UFOs taken from 100 feet all turn out grainy ..

Well, looks like I missed it. Rainy and cloudy all night. Just have to be content with the pictures I took a couple days ago.

Got up at 12:30 last night and looked out the window. Couldn't believe how light it was outside. Huge moon.

during a drive tonight back from visiting with some of my wife's relatives we got a really good look at tonight's full moon ... at first it was colored red .... the red shade dissipated after the moon arose fully above the horizon .... its size really looked much larger than normal

My understanding is that it is more about being brighter than being larger. It tricks the brain into thinking it's larger. Likewise, it's an optical illusion that the sun or moon looks larger at sunrise/moonrise and sunset/moonset.
