PSA - New Amazon PHONE SCAM

We got three calls in the last hour telling us that the caller was from AMAZON and they were calling to verify a suspicious purchase for a $999 iPhone Pro. To deny the purchase Press 1, to approve the purchase Press 2. The first two calls showed OUT of AREA for caller ID, the last one showed US GOVERNMENT in the caller ID window.

I immediately tried to call AMAZON customer service, but for the last hour their customer service has been down for maintenance. Finally I got thru. The man told me that the calls are a scam, they are NOT from amazon but are phishing calls. I asked how pressing 1 could get them information. He said whether you pressed 1 or 2 they would attempt to transfer you to another subject and gain info. I remembered that the first time I pressed 1 they said if I wanted to be entered into a drawing for a 2022 Ford Raptor, press 3.

I hung up.

On the next call, I pressed 1. On the last call, I hung up and blocked the number.

Watch for the calls.

I get those calls occasionally. I just log onto my Amazon acct. and look at my order status. I will occasionally get a call from my credit card company wanting to know if a charge was legitimate, easy enough to tell them I will call back to the phone # on my card to verify the call is legit.

I recently started getting a large number of calls where Caller ID would say "Spam Likely", made a change on my acct settings (T-Mobile) and those calls no longer go to my phone.

I don’t answer my phone unless it’s someone in my contact list.

Everyone always offers that advice... I used to follow it religiously. These days, a lot of the callbacks from various businesses come from part time employees working from home or a side cubicle, and using a cell. It doesn't register as Dr. so and so, or Bob's Pharmacy, But Unknown Caller. They often Don't leave a message. Or...

Like the scammers, phone phreaks, they change the caller ID. I have calls into the VA, the last scam call said US GOVERNMENT, in all caps. I get two types of calls like that, VA, and Federal Jury Duty. :D

Same here. My bank account is also set up to decline any purchases not shipped to the bill address. If I want to buy tickets or hotel room I call them before a trip and let them know my route.

I do occasionally get legitimate calls from numbers not on my contact list but the block on "spam likely" calls is stopping 99% of the spam calls.

I have my bank account set up to send me a text anytime my debit or bank credit card is used.
