We had the hay guy come look at the pasture a week or so ago, and he said we needed to treat it before he thought it should be cut again for hay.
Until then, top it to stop the weeds from seeding out... and just let the cows graze year round and give them a little hay when there was snow cover if they needed it. As light as most of the snow it here most winters, they can usually still find grass among the tree cover.



But, for the health of the future, we need to spray. Eventually we were going to need the sprayer anyway, and we could choose a broadcast sprayer, or... a boom sprayer. THIS is a 65 gallon Fimco boom sprayer. Tina sprayed a mixture of weed killer and two other chemicals but you can also use it to spray liquid fertilizer or whatever. That means we can use it around the house too. What was a shocker was the cost of the chemicals. Still cheaper than paying to have it done.


It took two full 65 gallon tanks to cover the pastures. We'll have to spray once a year every year for three years to kill off some of the weeds, and top off the weeds every time they start to bud. Work work work. But, the pasture sure is pretty.

Thanks folks. If you choose the right location, you almost don't need to go on vacation.

Sure like that sprayer. We have been trying to get someone to spray 5-7 acres at our place up north which is getting overrun with thistle. Can’t seem to find anybody who will travel up there and do it. Would love to do it myself with a set up like yours but without an applicators license getting the chemicals is tough. I can buy 2-4D at the local feed store but I’m limited to one gallon per purchase.

There are a lot of chemicals you can't buy without a license, but Miss T went to the local supplier and talked directly to the boss and he found her a combination she could apply in one pass that she could buy as a hobby farmer... No license. They arent cheap, about $200, but it was enough to do the north pasture and the pecan orchard, and cover the west fence line.

She did stay well clear of the pond, afraid the fish would end up "belly up". We certainly didn't want that. We are already seeing results .

Yeah, the product available to me at the local feed store requires a form to be signed stating I agree not to use it near water. Good call for Miss T
