I got an email from Amazon last week or the week before advising me that their records indicate I still have an active early gen keyboard Kindle, way old.

Yesterday, right in the middle of a page, my faithful kindle froze. I tried everything. I called customer service this morning... No joy, but she did suggest it died of old age. (I guess they sent out the kill orders... )

I ordered the new kindle. Not the paperwhite or oasis, but a basic reader.
Be here monday. $28 off, and $40 credit for books.

I've had a Nook, (Barnes and Noble) for many years now. I wore one out and my Wife had one she didn't use, so I got it. Now it's slowing down as well, so I purchased the new one a couple of years ago. It's not nearly as nice as the older ones, but with it I can order e books, download them, and then transfer them to my older Nook to read.

My 4th (5th?) Kindle's battery charge lasts only two hours and was locking up often so I bit the bullet and got a paperwhite two weeks ago. Had to get a new cover as it was larger but I am pleased with it, except for the cost.

I have had a kindle fire for years, but don't like to read on it, it's heavier, and when I take it to the VA, it's harder to store. The smaller base model kindle is light, smaller, and fits the outside pocket on the backpack on my wheelchair.

I've been through two. The original started locking up every now and then, and finally went to the great Kindle repository in the sky. The pup got a "free" basic one around that time with a new laptop deal, and no one else in the house was using it, so I took possession of it. Now that I am retired, I no longer have the desire to read on it. When I worked, I would read every break. Went through a lot of books during my breaks, and no, I didn't take the extra or extended breaks some folks like to.

The kindle is nice for me when we go places and I wait in the truck, or I'm in a waiting room somewhere. It's nice to take on trips to read in the truck when Tina is driving. But, to be honest, I like the feel of a real book, the turning of the pages, the history. I often find old bookmarks stuck in them, which are history in themselves.

I found an old ibm punch card from my time as a dispatcher with the pd when I first left the Corps. Midnights were slow, and we read a lot in the wee hours. I found a receipt from the hospital cafeteria from the night one of my children was born. The ex's water had broken, but she was dozing in her room, and was waiting to go into labor. I slipped down for coffee and a cardboard sandwich with a hospital pager and Stephen King for Company. (Salem's Lot) I bought another hardback used, and the original owner had written comments in the margins as she read. They added much to the book, and I found myself agreeing more often than not. Sadly, that book was in a box lost in a military move. Real books can hold history in more than just the words they contain. A baby fingerprint on a page, a coffee stain...

Who am I kidding, I love to read.
