Grenade season is approaching

Yep I have a big one in the front yard! Leaves dropping too and I saw the first couple of those sweet smelling blooms coming out to this evening.
Wife had thoughts of having it cut down to save me some work but it does give a lot of summertime shade in the front. Been dealing with it's cleanup mess for 38 years so a few more won't hurt!

How bout a picture for us ignorant folks who don’t know what a magnolia grenade is?

I just got done picking up another 3-4 hundred pinecones which I believe look like a grenade. It’s going to be a bad cone year as I have picked up probably 1500 of the little mothers.

I have pines also. Loblolly, which has fairly small cones. I'll try to remember to share a pic of the magnolia grenades when they start dropping later this year.

Btw, there are somewhere around 300 different varieties of the tree. The one that most people think of is the M. Grandiflora, which is prevalent in the South and is the MS State tree. It's also interesting that the species was widespread before bees existed, and depended on ancient beetles for fertilization and reproduction.

And the blossoms and seeds (inside the pod) are eatable. Blossoms are typically pickled, but both can be eaten raw, and actually taste pretty good. Here's a pickling recipe for the blossoms:
