I guess I will be hanging out at home a few days. I did my back in pushing a side by side out of the wash bay at work Thursday. So when not in to much pain maybe I will feel like loading some ammo for the 444 Marlin and the 222 Sako. I also started work on a Remington 521T stock today for my younger brother that has no time to do it his self. He does beautiful work refinishing stocks but with his job and the work on keeping things done at home he doesn't have the time to do it. I got it stripped and sanded down smooth ready for the first coat. The walnut on this one is a very hard wood and tight grained so it may not suck in a lot of finish and should fill nice. This rifle is a 1947 and they all had walnut stocks back then and this one was in great shape as far as issues with the wood but the finish has aged to the point where it is very brittle and scratches off easy and had some peeling to the bare wood. So it is time to fix it before the wood draws in any moisture. Here is the stock almost done with sanding.

This is the first coat of Tru-oil. These stocks were still a little grainy looking when new and were a satin to some having a low semi-gloss look.

I will post a picture when I get more done to it.

That's some pretty nice wood on the first shelf on the right. Wowza.

Dave is right....as all the wood that shows up on your bench ends up "wowza."

Trust that back will ease out of pain very quickly.

If I left it up to the "young bucks" the first one I clean up would still be in the wash bay at quitting time. Lazy don't even come close to describing the younger guys that work there. That is why I end up pushing them myself. They have their face buried in the computer all day. My wife is always telling my grandsons that their Pap can out work all five of them combined. That is a whole other story we won't get in to.

Daytime Dave, The butt stock is Marlin 1897 Century Limited wood. I bought three stocks and matching fore arms from Numrich's to use later to dress up some 39A's. Just need to decide which ones get the new wood. Each set was around $90 shipped.

Take care of your back. I can highly recommend yoga to help build core strength. If you can find classes described as gentle, beginners, or for seniors.
My back sent me to the ER three times in five years. After the last time I joined a gym and started yoga. It's been six years and and knock on a wood rifle stock. My back has been very healthy.

Hate to hear of the back issues. Rest up and heal. Good job on the stock!!

Back pain sucks, I share in you're pain!! Being an auto tech most of my life didn't help, but sitting around never helps me.
But sometimes there is no choice but to take it easy and rest a while. At least you have something to occupy you're time,

I think as we get older we tend to work harder. I know when I was a teenage I wasn't the hardest working person. Guess I learned the harder I worked the richer I got. Take it easy on the back.

I have three coats of finish on my brothers stock and it is filling the pores pretty good. I will sand it down later today and put another coat on it. It may take several more coats to get all the grain filled and then let it cure for a month or so and see how it looks. A little grainy would be about the way they were new. I didn't get any ammo loaded because my back is really about the same and hurts when I sit to long. It is starting to get to me now as I have things to get done before this week ends car cruises. I really hate to think I have to sit home on the holiday week end. There is some super nice car cruises in the area this week end and I look forward to going to them and seeing some of my friends I don't see unless I go to the cruise nights.
