I like using clay pigeons as rifle targets when out at the range. In many of the local ranges I'm not allowed to shoot anything steel so options for anything 'reactive' become minimal. Plastic targets tend to break or not react enough to know I've hit it. This lead to using clay pigeons and resting them on the hillside as a cheap and easy target. In fact, I picked up a box of 130 today for only $14. Not bad at all.

I've seen Champion brand clay holders online but they are always sold out (Midwayusa, Gander Mountain, Walmart, etc.).

Since I couldn't seem to find them in stock, I went looking for a DIY solution and stumbled on this YouTube video:

So simple, yet genius...

I'm going to give this a try. Hopefully the fact the target stand is metal won't be an issue at my range. Maybe I can coat it with some sort of spray? Any suggestions?

Cool DIY target holder; and yes, simple and cheap. I shoot at my friend's personal range, and there are a lot of trees with low hanging branches at the end of range. I can easily see making the holder, and with a hook at opposite end, hang on the branches. I'd like to try this with my Henry SGC next time at his range....it'll work, and would be fun. Thanks, JCN.

Also was interesting to see the lava lamp bubbling so well on the work bench!

I've seen them in use several times at family shoots on Christmas Eve .... they do OK until hit by a bullet ....

I gave it a try today. Used the same 9 gauge wire as shown in the video. I had some trouble bending the wire to the right size to hold the clay. Also, if anyone plans on doing this... buy a good bolt cutter! I bought a 3/16th inch bolt cutter and it barely did the job.

I'll post some pics from the range tomorrow.
