Wildlife officers had been looking for the elk since July 2019, when an officer spotted it as he was conducting a population survey of bighorn sheep and mountain goats in the Mount Evans Wilderness, a national forest area.

The elk was tranquilized and wildlife officers used a saw to shear off its antlers so the tire could be removed.

I saw that on the national news yesterday. Glad they got it off but really don't think they needed to take off his antlers. I'm sure he fells better now.

Yeah, why didn’t they saw/cut the tire off the elk?

They did both. Don't know the reason.

Kinda gives the term “collared Elk” new meaning.

Poor guy, now how’s he going to look for some love when he can’t compete for the cows. Hopefully he was able to pass on his genes before being de-antlered. I’m sure the game dept had their reasons for cutting off his antlers but sheesh, just let time and nature do it for you.

Cable cutters could have cut that tire off in minutes.
