Oh no....a surprise I don't need !

Over the past weekend I completed a landscape project to get rid of all big shrubs that need trimming. Finished up removing 2 large Azaleas and then
leveled and filled the area with river rock gravel. Now I remember that there was some poison ivy growing in the azaleas which most time doesn't bother me and may have had contact on my arm.
Well Sunday I had red hive like rash areas on my right arm and then next couple days along other arm and some places on legs however I wear long pants. After some research looks to be hives caused by hay fever seasonal allergy. Normally my allergy flairs up in late Spring which it did but not much in the Fall which is my best time of year. Must have stirred up some stuff when doing the digging around in the nice cool dry weather.
So I'm using topical steroid creams the dermatologist gave me and taking Benadryl at night along with my daily Flonase nose spray.
And worst of all I have to lay off the beer for a while as it seems to make it flair up.
Well at least I don't have to trim the shrubs no more and that is a major releif! I have to mask up and go down to my range property tomorrow to check on things...shoot and cut the grass.

Thanks! I thought my back might be ailing after shoveling over a ton of gravel but not the case and this other thing instead.

I've had my share of bouts with poison ivy over the years, too. Hope you feel better, soon.

Nice job and clean look.
I've been very fortunate and never had poison ivy affect me. I've removed a lot of it, over the years, and either I'm just lucky or not bothered by it. Regardless I still do everything I can to avoid contact. Both my sons seems to be the same way.

We have massive amounts of poison oak along our creek, I can keep it somewhat under control with 2-4d in the areas we use. I've never had it but my friend seems to be able to get it by just walking by it. I've heard that the more you are exposed to it the more sensitive you will be to it.
It will occasionally show up in areas a fair distance away from the creek but I understand that birds can eat the berries and spread it. Luckily 2-4d will easily kill it, Roundup will kill the leaves but not the roots, it will usually come back in the same place the next year. Interesting that goats can eat it with no ill effects.

Never had a problem when I was very young. Could just about sleep in it with no ill efects. Recently, ( last 4 to 5 years ) seems like I get it by just looking at it. Lasts about two weeks, but miserable!
Hope you feel better soon!

I'm one of those that can walk right through it, with no ill effects.
I can literally pull it right off the tree, last year a good friend of mine had some growing in the yard and wanted it gone but he and his wife both allergic to it.
So I pulled it and bagged it and hauled it away.
Hope gou are better soon Forty.

A long time ago I took my 12 year old son to a Cub Scout camp out on a mountain in Virginia.
I left him with the scout masters and picked him up a couple of days later. One day after he got
back the school called and said his eyes were swelling shut and that I should pick him up and take
him to our Doctor. When we got there practically all of his troop were sitting in the Docs office.
They had found some big vines, cut them up, and burned them in their camp fire. They were
Poison Ivy Vines. Everyone who had got into the smoke was affected. One young man had actually
changed clothes in the smoke and his whole body was inflamed.
Well, the Doc gave them all a shot of some kind and a day later they were back in school, but
they were a lot wiser.

That is a fact. I think it can also effect your lungs.

That doesn't sound good Mark.
When growing up it never bothered my brother or I, but my sister could just wlk by or seemed that, just looking at it and she'd be infected.

Well got back from my Dermatologist and yep a good case of poison ivy. It doesn't itch much at all just another bump will pop up.
Guess those two azaleas got even with me for pulling them out. Never had poison ivy before. Older you get the more stuff you catch.
