Large Pack Of Coyotes

I’m at the KOA in Carlsbad, NM and a large pack of coyotes just passed through the campground. I’ve never seen a pack of a couple dozen. It was amazing as they did not come through all at once and they were spread out.

Some were howling and you could rear replies in the distance and there was yipping between those closer together.

Around here they pack up in the Winter and sometimes the packs get really large.
I shined a light into the woods one night and the neighbor and I saw at least twenty pairs
of eyes looking at us out of the darkness. Nasty animals.

If that is the KOA that will deliver food to your site, been there and liked it.
Also in the town there is a BBQ place that is pretty good.

We were down in the caverns and my wife was looking all around and I asked her what
she was looking for. She said Orcs. (Lord of the Rings).

I think this was more of several smaller packs coming through in a relative short time. I would say the 20 was spread out over ten acres. They were all moving in the same direction. They were communicating width each other.

We were there in March of 2019. I had that sandwich as well. We had traveled up from Ft. Stockton, Tx. and it was a trip from hell. Maybe they're done now but it was all construction and MUD! It was interesting to see all of the camps of oil field workers though.
We left there and headed for Los Cruses, NM.

The problem we have with them is they multiply so fast that they kill all the game birds, and then they come into farm yards after dogs and cats. A neighbor down at the end of the lake collects road kill and dumps it in his field behind his house as bait. One Winter he killed over 80.

In the return trip I’m going to climb the 8751 foot peak. I climbed it two years ago and can still climb a thousand feet an hour

Yes a thousand feet an hour and I can do it hour after hour. I have climbed Mt Si three times in a row in one day. It’s about a 3,000 foot gain and I would time myself going up. On the way down I go slow because gravity is doing all the work and if you go fast you just injure yourself. Anyway when I got to the bottom I turned around and did it again and then again. The total was 9,000 feet gain in less than nine hours.

I was doing it for training. The last time I did it three times in a row was three years ago. I’m 72 now and can still out climb many 20 year olds.

Two years ago I came within 200 feet of the summit of Mt Stuart. To get to it you have to go over a pass and then down and up the mountain proper. Then on the way out you have to go over the pass again. The total elevation gain was 9,000 feet. When I was young I could do the entire climb in and out in one day.

People.called me a mountain goat and then shortened it to Mountain. So for about 20 years most people knew me as Mountain. I like shooting but mountaineering was my love.

I spoke with a fellow camper and he said it was more like 40. He has camp here before and said they do it maybe once a month. I thought they might do it during a full moon. When they came through the sliver of a moon was barely over the horizon and it was dark except for the campground.

Late summer and fall will see young of the year coyotes still running with the pack, so not unusual to see a lot of coyotes at one time. The youngsters also tend to be very vocal. This time of the year, we often hear them running through the neighborhood at night.

That campground is out in the boonies a bit. We stayed only a couple of nights this last trip.
We have also stayed at the one in town but that is mostly permanent oil field workers. It was
OK though.
There is a restaurant in town with a funny name that I can't remember, old age, but its on a corner and
has great breakfasts and lunches.

We try to get along with wildlife, but the coyotes made Miss Ts bad boys list. She used to free range her chickens, keeps them healthy, and the coop run fresher. Then the yotes started laying in the tall grass and taking chickens in broad daylight, seven in a single day. Eighteen in a week. No more free ranging for now... Unless she is working at the coop.

The possums, coons, etc, can't get at them in the secure coop, though we have watched then try all through the night on the game cams. the cattle panels and rat wire sure frustrate them all.

If they are a problem eliminate them. I eliminate rats all the time and think it’s okay because they do damage.

On a related subject I jokingly say I’m against deer hunting but I’m not against YOU hunting so if you shoot a deer I want some steaks .

I don't hunt, since I can't eat game meat. On the other hand, I have no problem with ethical hunters, and in fact am strongly in favor of it as it both controls the population and supports the shooting sports and the foundations that provide for the future of game animals and conservation in most states.

As you all likely know, I am a shooter and I have been known to use my skills for varmint or predator control on the farm.

I just realized all the animals I’ve shot were fur bearing. No deer, no hog, no fowl. Well I have hunted fowl with no luck. I’m going to be hunting fowl when I get to TX. And if I move to Montana or elsewhere where deer hunting is more the norm I want to make one clean harvest of a deer.
